FIFA World Cup 2026: Bosnia Stay in Round of 32 Race With Crucial 3-1 Win Over Qatar
Bosnia and Herzegovina kept their World Cup knockout hopes alive with a 3-1 victory over Qatar, as teenage star Kareem Alajbegovic inspired the win while the Asian champions exited the tournament without a victory.

Bosnia and Herzegovina kept their FIFA World Cup 2026 hopes alive after defeating Qatar 3-1 in their final Group B match in Seattle on Wednesday. The victory preserved Bosnia’s chances of reaching the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams, while Qatar’s defeat confirmed their elimination and extended their wait for a first-ever World Cup victory.

Goals from rising star Kareem Alajbegovic and Ermin Mahmic, along with an own goal by Sultan Al-Brake, secured all three points for Bosnia. Qatar captain Hassan Al-Haydos scored his side’s only goal in a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful effort.

Bosnia finished third in Group B with four points from three matches. They must now wait for results in other groups to determine whether they can secure one of the eight knockout spots available to third-placed teams.

Alajbegovic Steals the Spotlight

Much of the pre-match attention focused on veteran striker Edin Dzeko, who made his 150th appearance for Bosnia. However, it was 18-year-old Kareem Alajbegovic who emerged as the star of the evening. Widely regarded as one of Bosnia’s brightest young talents, Alajbegovic produced a performance that showcased his immense potential.

Bosnia started strongly and quickly put pressure on Qatar. Goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada was forced into two important saves during the opening stages as Bosnia dominated possession and created several chances. Although Qatar threatened occasionally on the counterattack, Bosnia controlled the tempo and looked the more dangerous side.

Wonder Goal Gives Bosnia the Lead

Bosnia’s early pressure finally paid off in the 29th minute. Alajbegovic collected the ball on the left wing, cut inside and weaved past several defenders before unleashing a stunning long-range strike. His powerful effort flew beyond the reach of Abunada and into the net, giving Bosnia a deserved lead.

The spectacular goal highlighted why many believe the teenager could soon attract interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Qatar's Misfortune Hands Bosnia Second Goal

Bosnia doubled their advantage just five minutes later. Dzeko played a key role in the move when he connected with a cross and fired a half-volley toward goal. Qatar defender Sultan Al-Brake attempted to deal with the danger but inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net.

The own goal gave Bosnia a commanding 2-0 lead and placed them firmly in control of the match. Dzeko nearly added a third shortly afterwards, but his effort struck the post.

Qatar Fight Back Before Half-Time

The near miss appeared to spark life into the Qatari side. Determined to stay in the contest, Qatar pushed forward more aggressively and began putting Bosnia under sustained pressure.

Their persistence paid off in the 42nd minute. Edmilson Junior delivered a low pass into the penalty area, and captain Hassan Al-Haydos finished confidently from close range to reduce the deficit.

Moments later, Qatar nearly equalized when right-back Miguel struck the post with a powerful effort. The Asian champions ended the first half strongly and headed into the break believing they could mount a comeback.

Bosnia Focus on Protecting Their Lead

Bosnia still had a mathematical chance of finishing second in the group. However, they needed a large victory margin and favorable results elsewhere after Switzerland took the lead against Canada in the other Group B fixture.

Rather than chase goals, Bosnia focused on protecting their advantage. They defended in an organized manner and absorbed Qatar's attacking pressure throughout the second half. The Asian champions continued searching for an equalizer, but Bosnia's defense remained disciplined.

Akram Afif came close when his effort found the side netting, yet Bosnia remained comfortable sitting deep and looking for opportunities on the counterattack.

Mahmic Seals the Victory

As the match entered its closing stages, Bosnia delivered the decisive blow. In the 83rd minute, Ermin Mahmic took advantage of a rare opening and calmly finished past Abunada to restore Bosnia’s two-goal cushion.

The goal effectively ended Qatar’s hopes of a comeback. Qatar continued attacking and committed almost every player forward, but their finishing deserted them when it mattered most.

Qatar Exit Without a Win

The final whistle confirmed another disappointing World Cup campaign for Qatar. Despite entering the tournament as two-time Asian champions, they failed to record a single victory and were eliminated in the group stage.

The defeat continued their search for a first World Cup win and marked the end of their 2026 campaign.

Bosnia Await Their Fate

For Bosnia, the victory keeps their World Cup dream alive. With four points from three matches, they currently sit among the leading third-placed teams. Their future now depends on results in the remaining group-stage fixtures.

The team will closely monitor those matches in the coming days, hoping their hard-fought win over Qatar proves enough to secure a historic place in the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time.
