FIFA World Cup 2026: Turkey Defeat United States 3-2 but Fail to Reach Knockouts
Turkey ended their FIFA World Cup campaign with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Group D winners the United States, but the win was not enough to secure a place in the knockout stage.

Turkey ended their FIFA World Cup campaign on a high by defeating Group D winners the United States 3-2 in an exciting match at Los Angeles Stadium. Despite producing their best performance of the tournament, Turkey failed to qualify for the knockout stage after results elsewhere went against them.

The United States had already secured qualification before kickoff. Australia and Paraguay claimed the other two knockout places from Group D, leaving Turkey's impressive victory as only a consolation.

Turkey Fight Back After Early Setback

The United States made the perfect start when Auston Trusty headed home in the third minute to give his side an early lead.

Turkey responded quickly and drew level just seven minutes later. Arda Güler finished a well-worked team move in the 10th minute to make it 1-1 and shift the momentum.

Turkey continued to attack with confidence. Their pressure paid off in the 31st minute when Barış Alper Yılmaz calmly finished to complete the comeback and give Turkey a 2-1 lead before halftime.

United States Equalise Before Late Drama

The Americans came out strongly after the break and equalised in the 49th minute through Sebastian Berhalter, setting up an entertaining second half.

Both teams pushed for a winning goal as the match became increasingly open. Turkey finally found the breakthrough deep into stoppage time.

Kaan Ayhan rose above the defence in the 90+8th minute and headed home the winning goal, sparking celebrations among the Turkish players and supporters.

However, celebrations quickly turned bittersweet after confirmation that Turkey had still been eliminated following the result in the other Group D match.

Turkey Make Their Chances Count

The United States dominated possession throughout the match and created almost twice as many attempts as Turkey. However, Turkey proved far more efficient in front of goal. Three of their four shots on target ended in goals, highlighting their clinical finishing.

The defeat also ended the United States' unbeaten run in the group stage, although they still finished at the top of Group D.

Turkey End Their Campaign With Pride

Turkey entered the match after losing their opening two games. Instead of fading away, they produced one of their strongest performances against one of the tournament favourites.

Arda Güler controlled the attack with his creativity and vision, while Barış Alper Yılmaz constantly troubled the American defence with his pace and movement. Kaan Ayhan's dramatic stoppage-time winner summed up Turkey's fighting spirit as the team battled until the final whistle.

Tactical Battle

Turkey used a 4-2-3-1 formation and focused on quick counter-attacks. Arda Güler and Barış Alper Yılmaz led the transitions and exploited spaces behind the American midfield.

The United States played with a 4-1-2-3 system and controlled possession for long periods. Sebastian Berhalter and Weston McKennie dictated play in midfield, while the full-backs regularly pushed forward to support the attack.

Although the United States created more scoring opportunities, Turkey defended with determination and punished defensive mistakes with clinical finishing to earn a memorable victory.
