FIFA World Cup 2026: Canada Edge South Africa 1-0 to Reach Last 16 for the First Time
Stephen Eustaquio's stoppage-time winner secured a historic 1-0 victory over South Africa, sending Canada into the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time.

Canada secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating South Africa 1-0 in a dramatic knockout match on Sunday. Stephen Eustaquio scored a stunning stoppage-time winner to send Canada into the next round for the first time in the nation's history.

The midfielder struck from outside the penalty area in the closing moments of the game, leaving South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams with no chance despite a full-length dive.

The late goal settled a tense contest that looked destined for extra time. South Africa struggled to respond before the final whistle as Canada celebrated a memorable victory at Los Angeles Stadium. Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on July 4 for a place in the quarter-finals.

Jesse Marsch Praises Canada's Character

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch praised his players after the final whistle and credited their success to the work they have done together over the past two years.

“It’s about the two years we’ve been together,” Marsch told his players during the post-match celebration. “Think about how we talked about sticking to the plan – you guys showing your character. You guys are Canadian heroes here.”

His comments reflected the determination Canada displayed throughout the contest.

Tight First Half Produces Few Chances

Both teams entered the knockout stage for the first time in their World Cup history. As a result, neither side wanted to make costly mistakes. The opening half remained cagey, with both teams defending well and creating very few clear opportunities.

Canada came closest to scoring just before the break. A corner created confusion inside the South African penalty area. Moise Bombito headed towards goal, but Aubrey Modiba cleared the ball off the line. Seconds later, Tajon Buchanan fired from close range, but Ronwen Williams blocked the effort with his chest.

Soon after, Richie Laryea went down inside the penalty area and Canada appealed for a penalty. However, after a VAR review, the officials decided not to award a spot kick. The decision frustrated the Canadian supporters, who loudly voiced their disappointment inside the stadium.

Coach Jesse Marsch also continued protesting as the players walked towards the dressing rooms. Defender Moise Bombito appeared to calm his coach and guide him away from the referee.

Canada Continue to Push After the Break

Canada maintained the pressure after halftime, while South Africa appeared comfortable slowing the game down and playing for extra time. The Canadians created another excellent opportunity before the second-half cooling break.

Tani Oluwaseyi tested goalkeeper Ronwen Williams with a powerful shot. The rebound fell perfectly for Jonathan David, but Mbekezeli Mbokazi produced an outstanding defensive clearance before the striker could score. Despite dominating possession and creating better chances, Canada still could not find the breakthrough as the clock continued to tick down.

Stephen Eustaquio Delivers Historic Winner

Canada finally found the decisive moment deep into stoppage time. Stephen Eustaquio collected the ball just outside the South African penalty area and struck a powerful long-range effort that flew beyond the diving Williams into the net.

The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Canadian players and supporters, while South Africa's hopes of forcing extra time disappeared instantly. The victory secured Canada's place in the Round of 16 for the first time in FIFA World Cup history.

Eustaquio Dedicates Victory to Canadians

After the match, Eustaquio dedicated the historic victory to the people of Canada and described the emotions behind his winning goal. “I think it was an amazing goal. When I shot, I thought everyone shot with me. Everyone added a little power to it when it went into the back of the net.”

The midfielder also praised the team's growing confidence since advancing from the group stage. “[The belief] It started when we came out of group stage. Belief is a big part of it. We will now get either Netherlands or Morocco. Anything can happen. If we keep working like we are doing, we might even win it.”

Canada Dream Bigger After Historic Victory

Canada showed discipline, patience and resilience throughout the match. They controlled large parts of the contest, created the better chances and finally earned their reward with Eustaquio's spectacular stoppage-time strike.

The historic victory has taken Canada into the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time. With confidence growing and belief spreading through the squad, Jesse Marsch's team will now prepare for another huge challenge against either the Netherlands or Morocco as they chase an unlikely place in the quarter-finals.
