Norway booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating Ivory Coast 2-1 in an entertaining Round of 32 clash on Tuesday. Erling Haaland once again proved to be the difference, scoring a late winner to continue his remarkable scoring streak and send Norway into a last-16 meeting with Brazil.
Haaland scores late to seal Norway's victory
Erling Haaland delivered when his team needed him most, finding the net in the 86th minute to hand Norway a hard-fought victory. The decisive goal came after Oscar Bobb played a perfectly weighted through ball to Patrick Berg. Berg calmly squared the ball across the box, allowing Haaland to finish from close range and secure Norway's passage into the next round. The goal also extended Haaland's incredible run of scoring in 13 consecutive international matches.
Norway make sweeping changes after France match
Norway head coach Stale Solbakken made 10 changes for the previous match against France, but all those regular starters returned to the lineup for the knockout clash at Dallas Stadium.
Among the returning players was Haaland, who nearly opened the scoring inside the opening three minutes. His powerful header was blocked before reaching the goal. The Manchester City striker remained a threat throughout the first half and tested the Ivory Coast defence again in the 37th minute.
Antonio Nusa makes history with stunning opener
The match came alive late in the first half thanks to a brilliant individual goal from Antonio Nusa. The young winger cut inside onto his stronger right foot, beat his defender with clever footwork and curled a superb shot into the top-right corner to give Norway the lead.
With the goal, Nusa became Norway's youngest-ever goalscorer at a major international tournament. Soon after taking the lead, Norway nearly doubled their advantage. Haaland moved into a dangerous position to meet a knockdown inside the penalty area, but Ibrahim Sangaré produced a crucial defensive challenge to deny him.
Ødegaard continues impressive creative record
Captain Martin Ødegaard once again showcased his creativity. He provided the assist for Nusa's opening goal, becoming the first player since Dirk Kuyt in 2010 to register assists in three consecutive FIFA World Cup matches.
The Arsenal midfielder almost collected another assist midway through the second half. His dangerous inswinging corner reached Torbjorn Heggem, whose close-range effort appeared destined for the net before substitute Amad Diallo cleared the ball off the goal line.
Amad Diallo changes the game
Moments after making that crucial defensive clearance, Amad Diallo made an even bigger impact in attack. The Manchester United winger combined brilliantly with Nicolas Pépé in a quick one-two before weaving through several Norway defenders with dazzling footwork. He then fired an excellent finish into the net to level the score at 1-1. His goal gave Ivory Coast fresh belief and set up a tense finish.
Norway substitutes combine for the winner
Just 12 minutes after Ivory Coast equalised, Norway's substitutes played a decisive role. Oscar Bobb delivered a defence-splitting pass that released Patrick Berg behind the backline. Berg kept his composure and squared the ball perfectly for Haaland, who made no mistake with a simple finish. The goal restored Norway's lead and ultimately proved to be the winner.
Nyland preserves Norway's lead
Ivory Coast nearly forced extra time during stoppage time. Amad Diallo struck a dangerous free-kick towards the top-left corner, but Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland reacted brilliantly to push the effort away and protect his team's narrow advantage. His save ensured Norway held on for a historic victory.
Haaland delivers despite limited involvement
Although Haaland was quiet for long periods, he once again showed why he is one of the world's most clinical strikers. During the first half, he had only eight touches and completed just one pass, yet he still managed to make the decisive contribution when the opportunity arrived.
Haaland finished the game with four shots, narrowly missing the chance to become the first player since Karim Benzema in 2014 to record at least five shots in each of his first three World Cup appearances.
However, the statistic mattered little compared to the result. The Norwegian striker has now scored 25 goals in his last 13 international matches, continuing one of the hottest scoring runs in international football.
Historic achievement for Norway
The victory marked an important milestone in Norway's football history. It was the country's first-ever win in a FIFA World Cup knockout match, earning them a place in the last 16.
Norway also became the first European nation since Ukraine in 2006 to win their first-ever World Cup knockout game. Their reward is a blockbuster Round of 16 clash against Brazil.
Ivory Coast bow out after brave performance
Ivory Coast's first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage ended in disappointment despite a spirited display. The African side actually created more opportunities than Norway, finishing with 14 shots compared to Norway's nine. They also earned an impressive 14 corner kicks, but failed to convert those set-piece chances into goals.
Yan Diomande, who had impressed throughout the group stage, was unable to produce another standout performance. However, substitute Amad Diallo emerged as Ivory Coast's brightest performer. Besides scoring a superb equaliser, he also made a vital goal-line clearance and nearly forced extra time with his late free-kick.
His goal also placed him in the record books, as Amad became only the third African player to score twice as a substitute in a single FIFA World Cup, following Roger Milla for Cameroon in 1990 and Pape Gueye for Senegal earlier in the tournament. Despite their elimination, Ivory Coast left the competition with plenty of positives after a determined and competitive World Cup campaign.
