France produced another commanding display at the FIFA World Cup, defeating Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32 to book their place in the last 16. Kylian Mbappé scored twice while Michael Olise delivered an outstanding all-round performance, helping Les Bleus set up a Round of 16 meeting with Paraguay.
Mbappé's brace powers France into the last 16
Kylian Mbappé once again showed why he is one of the world's best players, scoring two goals as France comfortably overcame Sweden. The French captain opened the scoring just before halftime with a clinical finish after a superb team move. He then added his second goal in the second half to complete a dominant victory.
France's convincing win means they will now face Paraguay in the Round of 16.
France dominate from start to finish
France controlled the match from the opening whistle in front of 80,663 spectators at New York New Jersey Stadium. Didier Deschamps' side enjoyed most of the possession and consistently threatened Sweden's goal throughout the contest.
Before breaking the deadlock, France had already struck the woodwork twice. Mbappé hit the post with one effort, while Michael Olise also came close after rattling the frame of the goal. Sweden struggled to match France's pace, movement and creativity, spending most of the game defending.
Olise delivers a masterclass
Michael Olise was one of the standout performers on the night. The creative midfielder constantly troubled Sweden's defence with his passing, movement and dribbling.
He provided the assist for Bradley Barcola's goal early in the second half before producing another brilliant pass that allowed Mbappé to score his second goal of the evening. Although Olise did not get his name on the scoresheet, his influence was evident throughout the match.
Mbappé closes in on World Cup history
Mbappé's two goals carried him higher into the tournament's scoring charts. The France captain now has six goals at this World Cup, drawing level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
His overall World Cup tally has also reached 18 goals, leaving him just one behind Messi's all-time World Cup record of 19 goals. At only 27 years old, Mbappé has plenty of opportunities to surpass that milestone.
Emotional celebration for Deschamps
After scoring his opening goal, Mbappé celebrated by embracing head coach Didier Deschamps on the touchline. Deschamps had missed France's final group-stage match against Norway after travelling home to attend his mother's funeral. The emotional moment reflected the close bond between the players and their manager.
Deschamps will step down after this World Cup, ending a remarkable 14-year spell in charge of the French national team. During his tenure, he guided France to the 2018 FIFA World Cup title after previously captaining the country to its first World Cup triumph in 1998.
Familiar opponent awaits France
France's next challenge will be Paraguay in the Round of 16. The fixture carries special memories for French football supporters. During the 1998 FIFA World Cup, France defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16 thanks to Laurent Blanc's famous golden goal before eventually lifting the trophy on home soil. Les Bleus will now meet the South American side again, this time in Philadelphia, and will enter the match as strong favourites.
Sweden unable to trouble France
Sweden arrived with several dangerous attacking players, including Premier League stars Viktor Gyökeres, Alexander Isak and Anthony Elanga. However, Graham Potter's side rarely saw enough of the ball to create meaningful chances.
France's dominance in midfield and defence prevented Sweden's forwards from making any significant impact. Although Sweden's World Cup journey ended in disappointment, reaching the knockout stage was already considered a major achievement after they secured qualification through the playoffs.
France survive early offside disappointment
France thought they had taken the lead in the 20th minute. Michael Olise played a perfectly timed through ball to Mbappé, who calmly finished past the goalkeeper. However, the celebrations were cut short after a tight offside decision ruled out the goal.
Instead of becoming frustrated, France increased the pressure. Mbappé later struck the post following an excellent cross from Jules Koundé, while Adrien Rabiot narrowly missed the target with a long-range effort.
France finally break through before halftime
France continued creating opportunities throughout the opening half. Olise almost produced one of the goals of the tournament with an incredible overhead bicycle kick that struck the upright. Ousmane Dembélé reacted quickest to the rebound but fired wide.
The breakthrough finally arrived moments before halftime. After Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström pushed away another Olise effort, France worked the resulting corner intelligently through Dembélé and Olise before finding Mbappé, who finished confidently to give his side a deserved lead.
Barcola and Mbappé finish the job
Sweden hoped halftime would help them regroup, but France doubled their lead just eight minutes into the second half. Olise threaded a brilliant pass through the legs of Gustaf Lagerbielke, allowing Bradley Barcola to race through and fire home. Olise later missed a chance to score himself after breaking clear of the defence.
However, he quickly made up for it with another outstanding assist. His perfectly weighted pass found Mbappé, who curled a superb finish into the net in the 74th minute to seal France's 3-0 victory.
France emerge as one of the favourites
France have looked increasingly impressive with every match at this World Cup. Their attacking quartet of Mbappé, Olise, Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola continues to create problems for every defence they face, while their overall balance makes them one of the strongest contenders for the title.
Although tougher challenges are expected later in the tournament, France head into the Round of 16 full of confidence, and Paraguay will face a huge task to stop a team currently performing at an exceptionally high level.
