FIFA World Cup 2026: Kylian Mbappé Fires France into Quarter-finals With 1-0 Win Over Paraguay
Kylian Mbappé's second-half penalty gave France a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay and secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals.

Kylian Mbappé scored the only goal of the match as France defeated Paraguay 1-0 to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals. The France captain converted a second-half penalty in the 70th minute to seal victory in a tense Round of 16 clash at Philadelphia Stadium.

With the win, France set up a quarter-final showdown against Morocco, whom they defeated 2-0 in the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Paraguay Frustrate France in Tight Contest

Paraguay once again proved difficult opponents, just as they had against Germany in the previous round. The South American side defended with discipline and denied France clear chances for much of the match.

In fact, it was only the fourth time since 1966 that France failed to register a shot during the opening 20 minutes of a World Cup match. France eventually threatened when Manu Koné's deflected effort almost found the bottom corner, but Paraguay survived the early scare.

Doué Wins the Crucial Penalty

France manager Didier Deschamps changed the game by introducing Désiré Doué from the bench in the second half. The substitution paid off almost immediately.

Doué drove into the penalty area before Diego Gómez brought him down. Referee Ilgiz Tantashev initially allowed play to continue but awarded a penalty after reviewing the incident on the pitchside VAR monitor.

Mbappé Keeps His Nerve

Paraguay tried to delay the restart and distract Mbappé before the penalty. The France captain remained composed and calmly sent goalkeeper Gill the wrong way from the spot.

The goal was Mbappé's 19th in 19 FIFA World Cup appearances and his 11th knockout-stage goal, extending his record as the highest scorer in World Cup knockout matches. The strike also moved him level with Lionel Messi on seven goals in the race for the tournament's Golden Boot.

France Hold Firm Under Late Pressure

Paraguay pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan made an important save to deny Mauricio, while Gill produced an outstanding double save to stop Mbappé from adding a second goal. France successfully defended their lead through 10 minutes of stoppage time to book their place in the last eight.

Mbappé Continues to Rewrite History

The match marked another milestone in Mbappé's remarkable World Cup career. On his 10th appearance as France captain at a major tournament, he scored France's 150th goal in FIFA World Cup history. Only Brazil, Germany and Argentina have scored more goals than France in the history of the tournament.

Since the 2018 World Cup, Mbappé has scored 19 goals, four more than any other player during that period. His 11 knockout-stage goals are also more than the combined knockout tallies of Brazil and England over the same span.

France Deserved the Victory

Although Paraguay defended resolutely throughout the contest, France remained patient and eventually found the breakthrough. Doué's impact off the bench proved decisive, becoming only the second French substitute to win a penalty in a World Cup match after Randal Kolo Muani in the 2022 final against Argentina.

Paraguay earned praise for their determined defending, but their repeated attempts to slow the game and disrupt France's rhythm overshadowed their performance. France now move into the quarter-finals, where they will renew their rivalry with Morocco in a highly anticipated last-eight encounter.
