US President Donald Trump offered to help find a solution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war during a 90-minute phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the Kremlin.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov revealed the details on Sunday while speaking to reporters. He said Trump made the offer during their conversation on Saturday as Putin wished him a happy US Independence Day.
Trump Reaffirms Push for Peace
According to Ushakov, the two leaders also discussed Trump's expected participation in the NATO summit in Turkey next week. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he also spoke with Trump.
“The American president once again confirmed his readiness to work towards a rapid end to the fighting and find solutions to overcome the crisis,” Ushakov said of Trump's call with the Russian president. Reuters quoted Ushakov as describing the conversation as “business-like and quite constructive.”
He added that Russia continues to seek “a political-diplomatic resolution of the conflict, with due account of Russia’s fundamental approach.”
Russia Blames Ukraine for Escalating Conflict
During the briefing, Ushakov accused Ukraine and its European allies of prolonging the war. He claimed they were “counting on extending and even escalating the conflict, and on terrorism against civilians.”
The remarks referred to Ukraine's long-range drone and missile strikes on Russian targets, particularly energy facilities linked to the oil industry. Those attacks have contributed to fuel shortages in several Russian regions.
Kremlin Claims Battlefield Gains
Ushakov said Putin told Trump that Russian forces continue to make steady progress on the battlefield. He said the Russian president “depicted the real situation on the battlefield where the Russian armed forces are confidently advancing, liberating one locality after another.”
Russian military commanders also informed Putin on Friday that their forces had captured the strategically important city of Kostiantynivka in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region.
Ukraine Rejects Russian Claims
Ukraine quickly denied Russia's claim of capturing Kostiantynivka. On Saturday, President Zelenskyy and Ukraine's General Staff said Ukrainian forces still controlled the city. The disagreement reflects the sharply different versions of events presented by both sides as fighting continues.
Peace Talks Remain Stalled
Russia has repeatedly said that any peace agreement must include Moscow taking full control of Ukraine's Donbas region. Ukraine has firmly rejected that demand.
Last month, Zelenskyy invited Putin to hold a one-on-one meeting in an effort to advance peace negotiations. However, the Kremlin leader declined the proposal. Despite Trump's latest offer to help broker a settlement, both sides remain deeply divided on the conditions required to end the war.
