FIFA World Cup 2026: France Seal Semi-Final Spot with Dominant Victory Over Morocco
Kylian Mbappé scored a stunning goal and set up Ousmane Dembélé after missing a penalty as France defeated Morocco 2-0 to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.

France secured a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals after defeating Morocco 2-0 at Boston Stadium. Kylian Mbappé overcame the disappointment of missing a first-half penalty to produce a match-winning display. He scored a brilliant goal and later set up Ousmane Dembélé for France’s second as Didier Deschamps’ side moved one step closer to the World Cup title.

Mbappé Misses Early Penalty

France started the match on the front foot and immediately put Morocco under pressure. Mbappé tested goalkeeper Yassine Bounou with a powerful long-range shot, but the Moroccan keeper pushed it behind for a corner.

France continued attacking from the resulting corner, and Dayot Upamecano almost broke the deadlock with a close-range header. However, Bounou reacted quickly once again to deny him. The biggest chance of the first half arrived in the 25th minute. Noussair Mazraoui brought down Mbappé inside the penalty area, and the referee pointed to the spot.

There was a delay of more than three minutes before the penalty could be taken. When Mbappé finally stepped up, his effort lacked power, allowing Bounou to dive to his left and comfortably make the save.

France Continue to Dominate

Despite the missed penalty, France controlled possession and created several opportunities before halftime. Bounou remained Morocco’s hero as he denied Désiré Doué with another impressive save. Soon after, Lucas Digne nearly scored from long range, but his powerful strike crashed against the crossbar.

Although France created numerous chances, Morocco held firm and reached the break with the score still level.

Mbappé Produces a Moment of Magic

France finally found the breakthrough just after the hour mark. Doué slipped a clever pass through the legs of Neil El Aynaoui, allowing Mbappé to collect the ball near the edge of the box. The Real Madrid forward calmly opened his body before curling a stunning shot into the far corner beyond Bounou.

The goal lifted Mbappé level with Lionel Messi in the race for the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot. It also took him within one goal of Messi’s all-time World Cup tally of 21.

Dembélé Doubles France’s Lead

France wasted little time adding a second goal. Only six minutes after Mbappé’s opener, the forward turned provider. He laid the ball into the path of Ousmane Dembélé, who drove towards the edge of the area before firing a low shot. Bounou managed to get a hand to the effort, but he could not stop the ball from finding the bottom corner.

The second goal effectively ended Morocco’s hopes of a comeback.

Injury Concern for France

Late in the match, Mbappé went down without any challenge from an opponent. France quickly substituted him, with Jean-Philippe Mateta replacing the star forward.

Mbappé acknowledged the supporters as he walked off the pitch, suggesting the substitution was only precautionary. He later sat on the bench with an ice pack on his ankle. However, he appeared comfortable during France’s post-match celebrations, easing fears ahead of the semi-final against either Spain or Belgium.

Morocco Fail to Find a Response

Morocco tried to increase the pressure during the closing stages but struggled to create clear chances. Neil El Aynaoui headed wide when presented with an opportunity, while France almost added a third goal as Bradley Barcola went close near the end.

France comfortably protected their two-goal advantage to seal another impressive victory and continue their march towards the World Cup final.

Mbappé Keeps Pace with Messi

Mbappé once again proved why he is one of the tournament's biggest stars. He became only the fourth player in the last 60 years to miss a penalty, score a goal and provide an assist in the same World Cup match. Interestingly, Lionel Messi achieved the same feat only a few days earlier during Argentina’s comeback victory over Egypt.

France had dominated the match long before Mbappé finally found the net. They produced 1.87 expected goals (xG) in the first half alone, the highest first-half xG by any team that failed to score before halftime at the 2026 World Cup.

Bounou Breaks Goalkeeping Record

Although Morocco lost, goalkeeper Yassine Bounou delivered another outstanding performance. His save from Mbappé's penalty became his fourth successful penalty stop at World Cups, including shoot-outs. That is the highest total recorded by any goalkeeper since records began in 1966.

Across nine penalties faced in World Cup competition, Bounou has conceded only twice, while three attempts also missed the target completely.

Historic Numbers for Mbappé

Even Bounou could do nothing to stop Mbappé’s magnificent curling finish. The goal made the 2026 World Cup the first edition in history to feature two players scoring eight or more goals, with Mbappé joining Lionel Messi at the top. Mbappé also became only the second player in World Cup history to reach 20 career tournament goals, following Messi.

In addition, he became the first footballer ever to register 10 or more goal involvements in multiple World Cups. At the 2026 tournament, Mbappé has already contributed eight goals and three assists, surpassing his impressive 2022 campaign when he finished with eight goals and two assists.
