West Indies Women crushed Zimbabwe Women by eight wickets in the first T20I of the three match series in Harare. After being invited to bat first, Zimbabwe Women managed to score only 97/9 in their 20 overs. Chinelle Henry (1/7 in 3 overs) put Zimbabwe Women under pressure from the start. Karishma Ramharack (3/17 in 4 overs), Afy Fletcher (2/18 in 4 overs) and Jahzara Claxton (2/16 in 3 overs) then continued to dominate, preventing the Zimbabwean batters from scoring freely and dismantling their batting line-up. Beloved Biza was the top scorer for Zimbabwe Women.
In reply, Eboni Brathwaite and Jahzara Claxton gave West Indies Women a flying start. They added 38 runs for the first wicket in just 4.1 overs. Realeanna Grimmond then joined Claxton and took West Indies Women close to the finishing line before being dismissed by Beloved Biza (1/10 in 1.5 overs) with the scores level.
Stafanie Taylor completed the chase by taking a single off the next delivery. Grimmond scored a quick 34 runs off 25 balls, while Claxton remained unbeaten on 31 runs off 37 balls. The victory gave West Indies Women a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series.
Zimbabwe Struggle to Score Freely
West Indies won the toss and decided to bowl first. Their bowlers kept Zimbabwe under pressure throughout the innings and restricted their scoring opportunities. Zimbabwe reached only 40/3 at the halfway stage. Ramharack was the main threat during the first half of the innings as she picked up two wickets. Beloved Biza and Zimbabwe captain Josephine Nkomo then tried to rebuild the innings. They added 24 runs for the fifth wicket, but their partnership came at only a run-a-ball. Biza eventually top-scored for Zimbabwe with 21 runs from 24 deliveries. Wicketkeeper-opener Modester Mupachikwa made 20, but she needed 33 balls to reach that score.West Indies Bowlers Maintain Tight Control
Zimbabwe struggled to find boundaries throughout their innings. There were more than 60 dot balls, while the hosts managed only seven fours. Only three of those boundaries came during the final five overs, highlighting the pressure applied by the West Indies attack. West Indies gave away 10 extras, including eight wides and one no-ball. Apart from those additional runs, their bowling performance remained disciplined. Zimbabwe never managed to build the momentum needed for a competitive total.West Indies Make a Fast Start
West Indies began their chase in explosive fashion. They scored 12 runs from the first two balls. The start included a six from Eboni Brathwaite and six wides bowled by Kudzai Chigora. Brathwaite and Claxton then put together a 38-run partnership from just 25 balls. Claxton played the supporting role during the partnership while Brathwaite attacked the Zimbabwe bowlers.Grimmond Keeps the Chase Moving
Brathwaite was eventually dismissed for 23 from 14 balls, but West Indies remained firmly in control. Realeanna Grimmond then took charge of the chase. She struck five fours and one six while scoring 34 from 25 balls. Claxton stayed at the other end and gradually increased her scoring rate as West Indies moved closer to victory.Claxton Finishes the Job
Grimmond was dismissed when the scores were level, leaving West Indies just one run away from victory. Stafanie Taylor then walked in and needed only one delivery to complete the win. Claxton remained unbeaten on 31 and was named Player of the Match for her valuable contribution with both bat and ball. West Indies completed an eight-wicket victory and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series.Brief Scorecard
