A devastating fire broke out late Wednesday at a large hypermarket in Kut city, located in eastern Iraq, killing at least 50 people and injuring several others. The incident was reported by Iraq's official news agency, INA.
Five-storey building engulfed
According to videos widely shared online, the blaze consumed a five-storey shopping centre as firefighters worked through the night to put out the flames. However, Reuters stated it could not independently confirm the authenticity of these videos.
Investigation underway
The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. However, Wasit province governor Mohammed al-Miyahi confirmed that a formal investigation is in progress. He said, “The number of victims has reached about 50 people, martyrs and injured, in the tragic fire at a major shopping centre.”
He added that the preliminary findings of the probe would be made public within 48 hours. Moreover, “We have filed lawsuits against the owner of the building and the mall,” al-Miyahi told INA.
Legal action taken
Authorities have initiated legal proceedings against the building’s owner and the mall management, suggesting possible negligence or safety violations. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
