Sam Nivola is making his mark in Hollywood. Although he is the son of actors Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola, he insists his achievements are his own. The young actor makes it clear he is building his career with independence and dignity.

In an interview with Variety, Sam addressed whether his success came from his famous family. He stated, “Other than my genes, I don’t think I can attribute much of my success to my parents.” Furthermore, he added, “I feel proud that I’ve done it for myself and sometimes despite them.”

Early Roles and Breakthrough

Sam secured his first major role in Noah Baumbach’s 2022 film White Noise. He played Heinrich Gladney, the son of characters portrayed by Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig. Significantly, a high school drama teacher got him the audition — not a family contact.

He explained, “I didn’t have my dad’s agent make so-and-so call me. I did it myself. I didn’t want to provide anyone with any reason to say anything that I’ve done is due to anyone other than me.” As a result, he avoided giving critics a chance to credit his achievements to nepotism.

Starting Young in the Industry

Sam began his career in 2013 with a guest role in Doll & Em, his mother’s comedy series produced by his father. Since then, he has steadily added TV and film roles to his portfolio.

For example, he has played the sons of well-known actors in Eileen and Maestro (2023). More recently, in 2024, he portrayed Will Winbury, Nicole Kidman’s on-screen son, in Netflix’s The Perfect Couple.
