Independence Day celebrations in Karachi, Pakistan, took a tragic turn when three people, including a senior citizen and an 8-year-old girl, were killed due to “reckless” aerial firing.
In addition, more than 60 people were injured across the city. According to Geo News, the young girl was hit by a stray bullet in Azizabad, while a man named Stephen was killed in Korangi.
Rescue officials told the news outlet that dozens of people suffered gunshot wounds from celebratory gunfire during the festivities. Authorities quickly condemned the practice, calling it “reckless and dangerous.” They urged citizens to celebrate Independence Day safely.
Police Investigate and Promise Action
Karachi police have launched an investigation into the incidents. They assured the public that strict action would be taken against anyone involved in aerial firing.
Gun violence is a recurring problem in Pakistan. According to Ary News, at least 42 people, including five women, were killed in firing incidents across Karachi in January. Additionally, 233 people, including five women, were injured during these events. Five people lost their lives while resisting robbery attempts connected to the shootings, which occurred in different parts of the city.
Local authorities say these incidents are often linked to personal disputes, grudges, and resistance to robbery attempts, Ary News reported. Road accidents, robbery resistance, and aerial firing all contributed to a rise in deaths in Karachi earlier this year.
Road Accidents and Other Incidents Add to Death Toll
A report by the Chipa Foundation noted that 528 people, including children and the elderly, were injured in road accidents in the city, while 36 died. In addition, resistance to robbery led to three fatalities and fifteen injuries.
These reports highlight how aerial firing, accidents, and violent crimes continue to make Karachi’s streets unsafe for residents. Authorities continue to call for safer celebrations and stricter enforcement of laws.
