Kamindu Mendis Heroics Seal Thrilling Win for Sri Lanka in First T20I Against Zimbabwe
Kamindu Mendis’ explosive unbeaten 41 off 16 balls powered Sri Lanka to a thrilling four-wicket win over Zimbabwe in the first T20I after a dramatic middle-order collapse.

Sri Lanka edged past Zimbabwe by four wickets in the thrilling first T20I of the three-match series in Harare. Kamindu Mendis played a sensational knock to rescue Sri Lanka from a dramatic collapse and guide them to victory. His unbeaten 41 off just 16 balls turned the game on its head in the final overs of the chase.

Sri Lanka Face Late Trouble

Chasing 176, Sri Lanka looked comfortable at 96 for no loss, thanks to a rapid opening partnership between Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka. However, they suffered a middle-order collapse, slipping to 125 for 5. With four overs left, Sri Lanka needed 46 runs, and the match tilted in Zimbabwe's favor.

At this stage, Kamindu Mendis stepped in with a fearless display of power-hitting. He smashed four sixes and a four, punishing Zimbabwe’s bowlers for erratic lines, especially behind square on the leg side. His aggressive batting ensured Sri Lanka reached the target with five balls to spare and four wickets in hand.

Nissanka Sets the Platform

Earlier, opener Pathum Nissanka gave Sri Lanka a flying start with a superb 55 off 32 balls, his third half-century of the tour. He dominated square of the wicket, keeping the run rate high during the powerplay. Alongside Kusal Mendis, he added 96 runs for the opening stand, scoring at more than nine runs per over.

However, after Nissanka’s dismissal, Sri Lanka faltered, losing six wickets for just 46 runs in a seven-over spell. This slump allowed Zimbabwe to claw back into the contest before Kamindu’s explosive finish shifted the momentum again.

Maposa’s Costly 18th Over

With three overs remaining and Sri Lanka needing 34 runs, Zimbabwe turned to Tinotenda Maposa for control. But the over proved disastrous.

Kamindu started by reverse-scooping the first ball for four. Maposa then delivered a chest-high full toss, which Kamindu dispatched for six. A no-ball and a leg-side wide followed, adding to Zimbabwe’s woes. The over ended with another full toss, hammered for another six.

In total, Maposa conceded 26 runs in that over, effectively sealing Zimbabwe’s fate.

Bennett Anchors Zimbabwe’s Innings

Earlier in the match, Brian Bennett was the star for Zimbabwe. He scored a brilliant 81 off 57 balls, anchoring their innings and guiding them to a competitive 175. Bennett started with some lucky edges but soon found rhythm, especially exploiting the deep third region and reverse-sweeping the spinners effectively.

He built crucial fifty-run partnerships with Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl. However, Dushmantha Chameera ended his innings with a superb yorker in the 19th over, limiting Zimbabwe’s final push.

Chameera Shines With the Ball

For Sri Lanka, Dushmantha Chameera was the standout bowler, finishing with figures of 3 for 30. He struck early in the powerplay and returned at the death with pinpoint yorkers. Twice, he outsmarted batters trying to move across to the offside by targeting their stumps with rapid deliveries. His bowling was instrumental in restricting Zimbabwe to 175.
