CAFA Nations Cup 2025: India Beats Oman in Shootout to Win Bronze
India beat Oman 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to secure third place in their debut CAFA Nations Cup campaign.

India made a dream debut at the CAFA Nations Cup. They defeated higher-ranked Oman 3-2 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw at the Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan on Monday, September 8, 2025.

Oman Strikes First, India Fights Back

Oman scored first in the 55th minute. Abdullah Fawaz flicked the ball inside the box, and Jameel Al Yahmadi tapped it in at the far post.

India refused to back down. In the 80th minute, Rahul Bheke’s long throw found Danish Farooq, who flicked it to Udanta Singh Kumam. Udanta headed it past the keeper to level the score. The goal went to VAR but was confirmed.

Close Call Before Extra Time

In injury time, Udanta sent substitute Manvir Singh Jr. through on goal. Oman’s defense reacted quickly and cleared the danger. The match went into extra time with both teams pushing for a winner.

Just minutes into extra time, Oman suffered a blow. Defender Ali Al Busaidi received a red card for a reckless foul. India gained a man advantage but failed to score, and the match stayed level, leading to penalties.

Penalty Shootout Drama

India started the shootout strongly. Oman’s Harib Al Saadi and Ahmed Al Kaabi missed their first two shots. Lallianzuala Chhangte and Rahul Bheke converted for India, making it 2-0.

Oman fought back. Goalkeeper Ibrahim Al Mukhaini saved Anwar Ali’s penalty. Udanta then missed his attempt. Thani Al Rushaidi and Muhsen Al Ghassani scored, tying it at 2-2.

India kept their composure. Jithin MS scored calmly. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu became the hero by diving to save Al Yahmadi’s final kick, sealing a 3-2 win.

India Starts Strong Despite Oman’s Control

India began well with quick counterattacks from wingers Vikram Partap Singh and Chhangte. In the 16th minute, Nikhil Prabhu’s header from Muhammed Uvais’ long throw forced a tough save from Al Mukhaini.

Oman grew stronger as the first half went on. Sandhu made a key save in the 25th minute, stopping Issam Al Sabhi’s powerful shot. Soon after, Nasser Al Rawahi broke through but missed wide. Just before halftime, India came close again. Chhangte’s cut-back found Irfan Yadwad, but his shot went off target.

Historic Victory for India

India matched Oman’s intensity despite less possession. Their resilience and focus carried them through a tense match. Coach Khalid Jamil’s substitutions proved crucial, especially Udanta, who scored the equalizer and threatened Oman’s defense.

This bronze medal marks a historic achievement for India and boosts their confidence ahead of future tournaments.
