Trump and Melania Transfer to Backup Helicopter After Marine One Issue
Trump and Melania safely transferred to a backup helicopter after Marine One experienced a hydraulic issue during their UK visit, causing a brief schedule delay.

US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump faced a mid-air emergency on Thursday when Marine One, the president’s primary helicopter, developed a “hydraulic issue.” The helicopter made an unscheduled landing at a local airfield on the way to Stansted Airport in England.

Emergency Landing and Quick Transfer

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the incident. She said, “The decision of an emergency landing was taken out of an abundance of caution.”

She added that the president and first lady “safely boarded the support helicopter” after the landing. The issue caused a 20-minute delay in their schedule.

BBC reported that emergency services arrived at Luton Airport immediately after the landing. Photos showed Marine One and Marine Two positioned near the runway.

Marine One and Marine Two: Advanced Helicopters

Marine One and Marine Two are specially designed helicopters called “white tops” because of their paint. They have missile defense systems, radar jamming, and electronics that resist a nuclear electromagnetic pulse.

Marine One rarely flies alone. It usually travels with identical helicopters to confuse threats. It also travels with two or three Osprey MV-22 aircraft, called “green tops.” These tilt-rotor aircraft take off vertically like helicopters but fly as fast as airplanes.

The Ospreys carry support staff, special forces, and Secret Service agents ready to handle any mid-air emergency.

Trump’s UK Visit

Trump has used Marine One to travel between locations during his second visit to the UK. He arrived at Stansted Airport late Tuesday night and flew to Winfield House in London, the US ambassador’s residence.

On Wednesday, Trump and Melania visited Windsor Castle to meet King Charles III and Queen Camilla. On Thursday, Marine One carried Trump from Windsor to Chequers for talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Despite the helicopter issue, Trump continued his schedule after transferring safely to the backup aircraft.

Security Measures and Redundancy

The incident shows why presidential travel uses strict security measures. By flying with multiple helicopters and Ospreys, the US military ensures safety and continuity during emergencies. The hydraulic issue was handled quickly, and all scheduled meetings continued after the short delay.
