Russia Launches Massive Strike on Kyiv’s Energy Grid
Russia launched a major attack on Kyiv’s energy infrastructure, causing power outages and injuries, while Ukraine scrambles to restore services amid ongoing conflict.

Kyiv came under a “massive attack” by Russian forces on Friday, hitting vital energy installations and triggering power cuts across the Ukrainian capital. The Ukrainian air force warned residents to stay in shelters as the city faced attacks from both ballistic missiles and strike drones.

“The capital of the country is under an enemy ballistic missile attack and a massive attack by the enemy strike drones,” the Ukrainian military said, emphasizing the severity of the assault.

Casualties and Damage

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that Russian strikes targeted “critical infrastructure,” leaving at least nine people injured. Five of the wounded were hospitalized. Klitschko also noted significant disruptions to electricity and water supply, saying, “The left bank of the capital is without electricity. There are also problems with water supply.”

This attack reflects a tactic Russia has repeatedly used over the years: targeting Ukraine’s energy grid, especially ahead of the winter months, to increase pressure on civilians and authorities.

Ukraine Responds

Ukrainian Energy Minister Svitlana Grynchuk described the attack as a “massive strike” on the national grid. She assured citizens that energy workers are taking “all necessary measures to minimise the negative consequences.”

She added, “As soon as security conditions allow, energy workers will begin clarifying the consequences of the attack and restoration work,” signaling that efforts to repair the grid will start as soon as it is safe to do so.

Global Context and Diplomatic Efforts

The strike comes amid renewed international efforts to address the Russia-Ukraine conflict. After US President Donald Trump facilitated a peace deal between Israel and Hamas, attention has shifted back to ending the war in Ukraine.

Trump stated that Washington and NATO allies are “stepping up the pressure” to bring the conflict to a close, after his direct outreach to Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to secure a ceasefire.

“Yeah, we are stepping up the pressure,” Trump said during a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb. “We’re stepping it up together. We’re all stepping it up. NATO has been great.”

Friday’s attack on Kyiv highlights Russia’s ongoing strategy of targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, while Ukrainian authorities work to repair damages and maintain services. International efforts, including diplomatic and NATO pressure, continue as the conflict shows no signs of immediate resolution.
