Emanuel Slams Trump for Sacrificing India Ties in Pursuit of Nobel Glory
Rahm Emanuel accused Donald Trump of destroying decades of US-India relations out of ego, a failed Nobel bid, and alleged financial ties with Pakistan.

Former US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel sharply criticized President Donald Trump for ruining America’s relationship with India. He said Trump acted “out of ego and for some money from Pakistan.”

Speaking to MeidasTouch, Emanuel argued that Trump dismantled decades of bipartisan diplomatic work. “As we talk about Japan and Korea, our mismanagement of India — a major, major counterweight against China — has been disastrous,” he said. He added, “The President of the United States has literally thrown away 40 years of meticulous, strategic planning, and enhancing and warming the relationship.”

Emanuel, a veteran Democratic leader, served as Barack Obama’s Chief of Staff and later as Mayor of Chicago. He also represented Illinois in the US Congress for three terms.

Trump ‘Threw It All Away’ Over Nobel Snub

Emanuel said Trump wrecked the US-India partnership after Prime Minister Narendra Modi refused to endorse him for a Nobel Peace Prize. Trump had claimed he resolved “seven conflicts,” including the four-day military escalation between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack.

However, India dismissed Trump’s role, calling the ceasefire a bilateral decision. Emanuel said, “He threw it all away because Modi would not say that the President deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for the ceasefire that he worked out.”

He also accused Trump of acting for financial reasons. “The President, out of ego, and then out of money from Pakistan that was paying both his son and Whitkoff’s son,” Emanuel claimed. He referred to a 2024 business deal between the Pakistan Crypto Council and a company co-founded by Zach Witkoff, in which Trump’s sons and Jared Kushner reportedly hold stakes.

China Benefits as Washington Loses Ground

Emanuel called Trump’s actions “a major strategic blunder” that gave China a clear advantage. “This is a major strategic blunder that China has used to their advantage,” he warned.

He explained that Beijing is expanding its influence in the Indian Ocean while US exports face higher tariffs. Under Trump, Washington imposed nearly 50% tariffs on Indian goods, sparking anger in New Delhi.

Furthermore, the Trump administration criticized India’s purchase of Russian oil during the Ukraine war. India pushed back, accusing Washington of “double standards” in its trade and foreign policy.

Fallout and Future Implications

Emanuel warned that Trump’s ego-driven diplomacy severely weakened America’s position in Asia. He said the loss of India’s trust allowed China to fill the gap. “It’s a setback that will take years to repair,” he cautioned.

Analysts agree that Trump’s personal ambitions overshadowed strategic interests. His actions, they say, alienated one of Washington’s strongest democratic allies in the Indo-Pacific.

In the end, Emanuel’s remarks reflect growing frustration within US diplomatic circles — that short-term ego and money-driven politics have cost America long-term partnerships.
