Thailand Politics: Pheu Thai Names Thaksin’s Nephew as Prime Ministerial Candidate

Thailand’s political landscape has again seen the return of a familiar family name. The Pheu Thai Party, closely linked to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has chosen another member of the powerful Shinawatra family as a candidate for prime minister.

On Tuesday, the party announced Yodchanan Wongsawat as one of its prime ministerial nominees ahead of the next general election. The development underlines the continued influence of the Shinawatra family in Thai politics, according to AFP.

Deep Family Roots in Politics

Yodchanan is Thaksin Shinawatra’s nephew and the son of former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat. His nomination makes him the latest relative from the family to step into national politics.

Over the years, several members of the Shinawatra family have held top political positions, shaping Thailand’s political direction for nearly two decades.

Party Defends Decision

Party leaders rejected claims that the move reflects dynastic politics. They described the nomination as a political strength rather than a liability.

Responding to questions from reporters, Yodchanan dismissed criticism linked to his family background. “I think that would be an advantage for us as a party. We actually have one vision that would be for the people,” he said.

Announcement Comes Amid Political Uncertainty

The announcement comes at a sensitive time for Thailand. The country is preparing for a snap election after parliament was dissolved. The sudden poll has pushed political parties back into full campaign mode.

This renewed political activity comes as Thailand faces broader uncertainty and regional tensions, adding pressure on all major parties.

Thaksin’s Long Shadow Over Thai Politics

Thaksin Shinawatra remains one of the most influential and controversial figures in the country’s political history. He was removed from office in a military coup in 2006 and later spent years living abroad.

Although he has since returned to Thailand, his political influence has continued through allied parties and family members, keeping him at the centre of national debate.

Recent Setback for the Shinawatra Camp

Earlier this year, the Shinawatra family suffered a significant political blow. Thaksin’s daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was removed from office following a court ruling related to ethical violations.

That decision weakened Pheu Thai’s grip on power and exposed divisions within the ruling coalition.

Calculated Bet on a Powerful Name

By naming Yodchanan as a prime ministerial contender, Pheu Thai appears to be betting that the Shinawatra name still resonates with voters. The party hopes the family’s popularity, especially in rural and working-class areas, will help it regain momentum.

However, critics argue that the move reinforces long-standing concerns about dynastic politics in Thailand and signals little change in the party’s approach.
