Israel’s defense ministry announced that a shipment of heavy US-made bombs arrived overnight. These MK-84 munitions were authorized by US President Donald Trump’s administration.
Significance of the Shipment
According to Defence Minister Israel Katz, the shipment is a major asset for Israel’s air force and military. He emphasized, “The munitions shipment represents a significant asset for the air force and the IDF (military) and serves as further evidence of the strong alliance between Israel and the United States.”
Approval of the Bomb Sale
Earlier in February, the Trump administration approved the sale of $7.4 billion in bombs, missiles, and related equipment to Israel. The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency stated that this deal would strengthen Israel’s defense and help deter regional threats.
Context of Israel’s Gaza Offensive
Israel launched a large-scale offensive against Hamas in Gaza in October 2023, following an unprecedented attack by Hamas. As a result, much of Gaza was devastated, and the conflict led to the displacement of approximately 2.4 million people. However, a ceasefire has been in effect since January 19, which allowed for the release of hostages held by Hamas.
Biden’s Block and Trump’s Approval
While Biden’s administration blocked a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel due to concerns over civilian deaths, Trump approved the shipment once he took office.
Marco Rubio’s Visit to Israel
Meanwhile, Marco Rubio began his official visit to Israel on Sunday. He is expected to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top officials. Rubio will discuss the Gaza ceasefire, as well as Trump’s controversial plan to relocate Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan. This proposal has sparked global outrage.
