A deadly explosion struck a popular bar in the luxury Alpine ski resort town of Crans-Montana in Switzerland, killing at least 40 people, Swiss police said early on Thursday. The blast occurred as people were celebrating the New Year, turning a festive night into a scene of tragedy.

Police said the cause of the explosion is not yet known and investigations are still at an early stage.

Blast Hits Popular Tourist Bar During New Year Celebrations

The explosion took place at around 1:30 am local time at a bar called Le Constellation. The venue is well known among tourists and was crowded as revellers welcomed the New Year.

“There has been an explosion of unknown origin,” Gaetan Lathion, a police spokesperson in Wallis canton in southwestern Switzerland, told AFP.

“There are several injured, and several dead,” he added.

Images shared by Swiss media showed the bar building engulfed in flames following the explosion. Emergency services were seen at the site, working to control the fire and assist victims.

The BBC also reported that several people were killed and many others injured in the blast, citing police sources. Rescue operations continued through the night as authorities assessed the scale of the damage.

Helpline Set Up for Families

Authorities have established a reception centre to assist those affected by the incident. A helpline has also been set up for families seeking information about loved ones.

“We’re just at the beginning of our investigation, but this is an internationally renowned ski resort with lots of tourists,” Lathion said.

Officials said identifying victims and informing families remains a priority.

Police to Hold Press Conference

Swiss police announced that a news conference would be held at 10 am to share further details. Investigators are working to determine what caused the explosion and whether any safety or security concerns were involved.
