The Norwegian Nobel Committee has clarified that a Nobel Prize cannot be shared, transferred, or withdrawn. The statement came days after Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said she wanted to share her Nobel Peace Prize with US President Donald Trump.
The committee addressed the issue directly.
“A Nobel Prize can neither be revoked, shared, nor transferred to others. Once the announcement has been made, the decision stands for all time.”
Machado’s Remarks Trigger Response
Machado made the comments after a US military operation in Caracas. She said she wanted to dedicate the prize to Trump. In an interview with Fox News, she said Trump deserved the award. She described his actions as something few leaders could achieve.
Her remarks quickly drew attention and led to the committee’s clarification.
Trump Responds to Offer
Trump reacted to Machado’s comments on Saturday. He said he would discuss the issue when she visits Washington next week. “I think it’s very nice she wants to come in, and that’s what I understand the reason is,” he said.
He later added that Machado would come to Washington to “pay her regards to our country, really to me,” saying he represents the country.
Why Machado Won the Prize
Machado won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for opposing what the Nobel Committee described as a dictatorship in Venezuela.
After US forces captured former president Nicolás Maduro and transferred him to the United States to face charges, Machado did not assume leadership. Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodríguez took over instead.
Nobel Rules on Prize and Money
The Norwegian Nobel Institute explained that winners may share prize money if they wish. However, they cannot transfer the Nobel Peace Prize itself.
The institute also said it does not comment on the actions of laureates after the award. Still, it continues to monitor their activities closely.
Trump’s Nobel Claims
Trump has often said he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. He has credited himself with ending eight wars within eight months of his second term. He has also criticised former US President Barack Obama. Obama received the prize in 2009 shortly after taking office.
