Vedanta Kalinga Lancers continued their impressive run in the Men’s Hero Hockey India League 2025-26 with a 4-1 victory in a penalty shootout against Accord Tamil Nadu Dragons. The league match at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium ended 1-1 after regulation time on Sunday, forcing the contest to be decided from the spot.
The result marked the Lancers’ sixth straight win of the season and kept them firmly at the top of the table.
Early Pressure From the Dragons
Accord Tamil Nadu Dragons started the match with confidence and intent. They pressed high and used quick passing moves to put the table-toppers under early pressure. Despite the Dragons’ bright start, the Lancers came close to opening the scoring in the ninth minute.
Alexander Hendrickx fired in a dragflick from the first penalty corner of the game, but the effort was cleared off the line. At the other end, the Dragons also looked dangerous and forced Lancers goalkeeper Krishan Pathak into making a couple of important saves in the opening quarter.
Govers Gives Dragons the Lead
The breakthrough came in the second quarter. The Dragons earned a penalty stroke, and Blake Govers (19’) showed calm under pressure to convert it and put his side ahead.
The Lancers thought they had responded almost immediately when Dilpreet Singh finished from close range. However, after a referral, the goal was disallowed. The Dragons stayed organised in defence for the rest of the quarter and went into half-time holding a narrow 1-0 lead.
Pathak Keeps Lancers in the Contest
After the break, the Dragons pushed hard to double their advantage. Once again, Krishan Pathak stood tall. The Lancers goalkeeper produced a series of excellent saves in the third quarter, denying the Dragons and keeping his team within touching distance.
His efforts proved vital. Towards the end of the quarter, the Lancers finally found the equaliser. From their fourth penalty corner of the match, Alexander Hendrickx (44’) stepped up and converted his dragflick to level the scores.
Deadlock Persists in Final Quarter
With the match finely balanced going into the final 15 minutes, both teams went all out in search of a winning goal. The Dragons earned a couple of penalty corners, while the Lancers also had their chances from set-pieces.
Despite the attacking intent on both sides, neither team was able to break the deadlock. As a result, the match moved into a penalty shootout.
Snowden Shines Again in Shootout
The shootout once again highlighted Vedanta Kalinga Lancers’ strength in goal. Jed Snowden, who had impressed in an earlier shootout win against HIL GC, came off the bench and made an immediate impact.
The Dragons missed their first two attempts, giving the Lancers a clear advantage. Arthur van Doren then calmly converted his chance to seal a 4-1 shootout victory.
The win ensured that Vedanta Kalinga Lancers maintained their unbeaten run in the tournament and underlined their status as strong title contenders.
