A late-night drive turned fatal for a 27-year-old software engineer in Greater Noida after his car fell into a water-filled construction pit. Despite repeated cries for help and multiple rescue attempts, Yuvraj Mehta drowned after remaining trapped for nearly two hours.
Dense fog, poor visibility, darkness, and a lack of proper rescue equipment combined to turn the incident into a tragedy. Officials later said ropes, cranes, and ladders were not long or strong enough to reach him in time.
What Happened That Night
Yuvraj was returning home to Tata Eureka Park in Sector 150 after work in Gurugram late on January 16. Thick winter fog covered the road as he drove through a poorly lit stretch.
During the drive, his Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara lost its way and plunged into a deep excavation pit on an empty plot beside the road. The pit had been dug for the basement of a building under construction and was filled with rainwater.
Officials later said the pit was more than 20 feet deep, while some estimates put the depth close to 50 feet. There were no barricades, warning signs, or reflective markers around the site.
A Struggle for Survival
After the crash, Yuvraj managed to escape from the sinking car and climb onto its roof. From there, he made an emergency call to his father, Raj Kumar Mehta, telling him that his car had fallen into a drain-like pit and urging him to reach the spot immediately.
His father rushed to the area, calling his son repeatedly while struggling through near-zero visibility. At one point, Yuvraj turned on his phone’s torch. The weak light shining from the water helped people on the road roughly identify where he was trapped.
Rescue Attempts Fall Short
As word spread, more people gathered at the site. However, rescue efforts failed to reach Yuvraj in time. The family said no trained divers were brought in during the critical period.
According to relatives, Yuvraj remained alive for almost two hours, calling out for help while clinging to his car. His father later alleged that some bystanders focused on recording videos instead of assisting, while authorities lacked proper equipment to carry out a swift rescue.
Eventually, exhausted and overwhelmed, Yuvraj slipped into the water and drowned before help could reach him.
Questions Over Safety and Neglect
The incident has raised serious concerns about road safety and construction practices in the area. The open, waterlogged pit had no safety barriers despite being located near an active road.
The family has accused authorities and builders of negligence, saying basic safety measures could have prevented the accident or saved Yuvraj’s life.
A Life Lost Too Soon
What began as a normal journey home ended in a heartbreaking loss. Yuvraj’s prolonged struggle, witnessed by many but resolved too late, has left his family grieving and has sparked renewed calls for stricter safety enforcement at construction sites across the region.
