Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the Speaker of the Knesset Medal on Wednesday, the highest honour given by Israel’s Parliament. The Knesset presented the award to recognise his role in strengthening ties between India and Israel.
Highest Honour from Israeli Parliament
The Knesset awarded the medal in recognition of Modi’s leadership and consistent engagement with Israeli leaders. The official citation said the honour acknowledges his efforts in turning India–Israel ties into a comprehensive strategic partnership.
The citation noted that relations between the two countries now cover defence, security, technology, innovation, and people-to-people exchanges.
Modi Reacts to the Honour
After receiving the medal, Modi said the recognition belongs to both nations, not just to him.
“I am deeply honoured to receive the Medal of the Knesset. I accept it with humility and gratitude. This honour is not a tribute to an individual, but to the enduring friendship between India and Israel. It reflects the shared values that guide our two nations,” he posted on X.

Rare Recognition from Both Sides
Modi is among a small group of global leaders who have received top civilian honours from both Israel and Palestine. His awards reflect India’s balanced diplomatic approach in West Asia.
In 2018, he received the Grand Collar of the State of Palestine, the highest honour granted by Palestinian authorities to foreign dignitaries. The award recognised his efforts to strengthen India–Palestine ties and India’s long-standing support for the Palestinian cause.
Historic Speech at the Knesset
Earlier in the day, Modi addressed the Knesset in a historic speech. During his remarks, he spoke about the Palestine issue and highlighted the Gaza Peace Initiative led by the Trump administration.
“The Gaza Peace Initiative holds the promise of a just and durable peace for all the people of the region, including by addressing the Palestine issue. The road to peace is not always easy but India joins you and the world for dialogue, peace and stability in this region,” PM Modi said.
He stated that the proposal has received support from the UN Security Council and offers a practical way forward. He reaffirmed India’s strong backing for the initiative.
Call for Peace in West Asia
Modi also referred to ongoing tensions in West Asia. He stressed the need for peace and stability in the region and said India stands with Israel during difficult times.
“Some years ago, when you concluded the Abraham Accords, we applauded your courage and vision. It was a moment of new hope for our long-troubled region. Since then, however, the situation has changed significantly and path is more challenging,” he said.
Warm Welcome in Israel
Modi delivered his speech just hours after arriving in Israel. He received a warm welcome at Ben Gurion Airport. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara Netanyahu personally welcomed him at the airport.
The visit marked another milestone in the growing partnership between India and Israel.
