India Crush Zimbabwe to Set Up Knockout Clash With West Indies
India crushed Zimbabwe by 72 runs with a record-hitting display to set up a knockout clash against West Indies.

India thrashed Zimbabwe by 72 runs in the 8th match of the Super Eight round of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

After being invited to bat, India posted a huge total of 256/4 in 20 overs. Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya scored blazing half-centuries. Sikandar Raza (1/29 in 3 overs) was the most successful bowler for Zimbabwe.

In reply, Brian Bennett played a brilliant knock of 97 runs off 59 balls and remained unbeaten till the end, but his effort fell short. Zimbabwe managed to score 184/6 in 20 overs and lost the match by 72 runs. Arshdeep Singh (3/24 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for India.

With this win, India sealed a knockout match against West Indies.

Strong Start After Being Asked to Bat

Zimbabwe chose to bowl first. They expected early help for their fast bowlers. The pitch did offer movement. However, India’s experienced bowlers later used the conditions much better.

India’s bowlers restricted Zimbabwe to 33 runs in the first five overs of the chase. After that, the match slipped away from Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe also hurt themselves in the field. They dropped two important catches. In the Super Eight stage, they dropped five catches in two matches. In the entire first round, they had dropped only one. A fighting unbeaten 97 from Brian Bennett was their only bright spot.

Samson Breaks Left-Hand Pattern

India changed their top order. They moved away from having three left-hand batters at the top. They decided not to promote Suryakumar Yadav to No. 3. Instead, they brought in Sanju Samson, leaving out Rinku Singh.

Samson attacked immediately. Zimbabwe opened with tall fast bowlers. Samson hit both for sixes straight down the ground off the back foot in the first two overs. He scored 24 off 15 balls before getting out. Along with Abhishek, he helped India post their biggest opening stand of the tournament — 48 runs in just 3.4 overs.

Abhishek Anchors, Others Accelerate

Unlike earlier games, Abhishek Sharma played with more control. He did not charge recklessly at fast bowlers. He started confidently. On his third ball, he hit an inside-out drive over extra cover for four. The delivery turned out to be a no-ball. He sent the free hit straight for another boundary.

Abhishek raced to 33 off 13 balls in the powerplay. Zimbabwe avoided spin until the field spread out. After the powerplay, Sikandar Raza and Bennett bowled two tight overs without conceding a boundary. Abhishek and Ishan Kishan stayed calm. Kishan used power. Abhishek used footwork. Both moved past the quiet phase.

Abhishek reached his maiden World Cup fifty in 26 balls. It was the second-slowest among his 11 T20I fifties, but it gave India strong momentum.

Dropped Chances Prove Costly

Zimbabwe’s missed catches changed the game. Kishan was dropped on 26 off 19 balls. He went on to score 38 off 24. Suryakumar Yadav was dropped on eight off four. He finished with 33 off 13.

These extra runs set up the final assault perfectly for Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma.

Hardik and Tilak Finish in Style

Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma added an unbeaten 84 runs in just 31 balls. Both hit four sixes each. They almost competed with each other.

Hardik reached a fifty. He had a 12-run head start when Tilak arrived. Tilak, however, scored faster at first. He found gaps square of the wicket and struck cleanly from ball one. Hardik relied on raw power straight down the ground. He overtook Tilak by smashing two sixes off the final two balls of the innings.

Early Movement Ends Zimbabwe’s Hopes

Arshdeep Singh gave away only one boundary in his first two overs. Hardik extracted strong seam movement with the new ball. Zimbabwe reached 25 without loss after four overs. But they needed 14.5 runs per over to stay in the tournament. The required rate was too steep.

Spinners Tighten the Grip

Axar Patel returned to the side after missing the previous game. He struck in just his second ball, dismissing left-hander Tadiwanashe Marumani.

Varun Chakravarthy removed Dion Myers. He continued his streak of taking at least one wicket in every T20I appearance.

Bennett Fights Back, But India Stay Ahead

Zimbabwe finished on 184, mainly because of Brian Bennett. He scored an unbeaten 97. He hit six sixes and batted at a strike rate of 164.4. In the first round, he had scored in the 130s without hitting a single six. This time, he showed more power.

However, as he neared his hundred, Arshdeep returned strongly. He picked up three wickets in two overs. That spell reduced Bennett’s chances of reaching a century because he ran out of partners.

India won comfortably by 72 runs.

Brief Scorecard

India (Ind) : 256/4 (20)
Abhishek Sharma 55(30), Hardik Pandya 50*(23), Tilak Varma 44*(16);
Sikandar Raza 1/29(3), Tinotenda Maposa 1/40(2)
Zimbabwe (Zim) : 184/6 (20)
Brian Bennett 97*(59), Sikandar Raza 31(21), Tadiwanashe Marumani 20(20);
Arshdeep Singh 3/24(4), Axar Patel 1/35(4)
Player of the Match: Hardik Pandya

The victory came on a night when Abhishek Sharma scored his first World Cup fifty. India also adjusted their batting order slightly. The change worked well. They posted the second-highest total in T20 World Cup history, going past the 254 Zimbabwe had conceded in their previous game. Six Indian batters contributed. Each played quick innings between 15 and 30 balls. Their strike rates ranged from 158.33 to 275. India smashed 17 sixes. That is their highest number of sixes in a single T20 World Cup innings.

Despite the big win, India had minor worries. Varun conceded 35 runs, including three sixes. Shivam Dube, used as the sixth bowler, had a difficult outing. He gave away 46 runs in just two overs.

Still, India were not under pressure to win big. South Africa’s earlier victory over West Indies had already eased qualification tension. That allowed India to experiment slightly. Arshdeep also achieved a milestone. He went past Jasprit Bumrah to become India’s leading wicket-taker in T20 World Cups. India now move into a high-stakes knockout clash against West Indies with strong momentum.
