Hunter Schafer, the star of HBO’s Euphoria, revealed that her new U.S. passport incorrectly lists her as male. Although she selected female when applying, the mistake still occurred.

Schafer Expresses Shock and Frustration

In a TikTok video, the 26-year-old actress shared her disbelief. "I just didn't think it was actually going to happen," she said, criticizing former President Donald Trump's gender policies. Since she is traveling abroad soon, she expects challenges at airport security. Her previous passport correctly identified her as female.

Trump’s Policy Changes Impact Passport Rules

On his first day in office, Trump signed an order declaring that sex is "incontrovertible" and cannot be changed. As a result, the U.S. now issues passports only with male or female markers based on birth records.

Previously, Americans could choose their gender identity for passports. In 2022, the Biden administration introduced an "X" option for non-binary, intersex, and gender-nonconforming individuals.

A Direct Result of Current Policies

Schafer lost her passport while filming overseas. When she applied for a new one, she again selected female. However, her replacement listed her as male. She believes this mistake directly resulted from the current administration’s policies.

Trump’s executive order states, "'Sex' is not a synonym for and does not include the concept of 'gender identity'." The U.S. State Department confirms that passports now only reflect birth sex.

Reality of the New Policy

Initially, Schafer did not believe the policy would affect her. "I'll believe it when I see it," she said. "Today I saw it."

She also emphasized that no one is exempt from these restrictions. "No one—no matter how wealthy or white or pretty—is excluded," she added.

Future Travel Challenges

Schafer updated her gender markers on her driver’s license and passport as a teenager. However, her birth certificate remains unchanged. Because of this, she now expects frequent difficulties at border security. "I'm pretty sure I’ll have to out myself to border patrol agents more often than I’d like," she said.

Meanwhile, Schafer continues to star in Euphoria, which is now in its third season. She plays Jules Vaughn, a transgender teenager navigating a complicated relationship with Rue.
