New Zealand Thrash South Africa by 68 Runs to Level T20I Series
New Zealand outplayed South Africa with a dominant all-round performance to secure a 68-run win and level the T20I series 1-1.

New Zealand crushed South Africa by 68 runs in the second T20I of the five match series. After they chose to bat on a pitch favourable for batting, New Zealand built a competitive total, largely due to a composed innings from Devon Conway. However, they could have scored more, as they failed to build strong partnerships. Their highest stand was the 48-run opening partnership.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s spinners struggled and conceded 78 runs in six overs, with Keshav Maharaj and George Linde proving expensive. In reply, South Africa lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 107 in 15.3 overs.

Benjamin Sears (3/14 in 3 overs) and Lockie Ferguson (3/16 in 3.3 overs) led the bowling attack and dismantled South Africa’s batting line-up. Additionally, Mitchell Santner chipped in with two wickets. George Linde fought back with a quick 33 off 12 balls and emerged as South Africa’s top scorer. As a result, New Zealand levelled the series 1-1.

Conway Anchors the Innings

Conway, who did not feature in the recent T20 World Cup, made a strong statement with the bat. He built the innings steadily and played most of his shots on the leg side, scoring the majority of his runs there.

He started aggressively, hitting a boundary off the very first ball. Later, he reached his fifty in 39 balls, including a slog-sweep for six off Maharaj and another big hit off Wiaan Mulder.

This was Conway’s highest score in T20Is in nearly two years. As he looked to accelerate in the final overs, he was dismissed while attempting a big shot, leaving New Zealand at 124 for 4 with less than five overs remaining.

South Africa Falter at the Death

After Conway’s dismissal, New Zealand were 126 for 5 in the 16th over, and South Africa had a chance to restrict them. However, their death bowling did not go according to plan.

Young bowler Nqobani Mokeona impressed with tight bowling, finishing with 0 for 22 in four overs. Gerald Coetzee and Ottneil Baartman kept things somewhat controlled, but the final overs proved costly.

Maharaj struggled in the last over. Cole McConchie hit him for a six, while Josh Clarkson attacked aggressively, scoring 16 runs in just four balls. Clarkson remained unbeaten on 26 off nine balls. South Africa conceded 42 runs in the final three overs, allowing New Zealand to finish strongly.

Early Wickets Hurt South Africa

In reply, South Africa started well, reaching 24 without loss in the first three overs. However, their innings quickly collapsed after losing early wickets.

Ben Sears struck first, dismissing Connor Esterhuizen with a sharp catch taken by Tim Robinson. Soon after, Mulder was dismissed while trying to attack Mitchell Santner. Then, Tony de Zorzi fell cheaply, leaving South Africa struggling at 31 for 3.

Sears and Santner Seal the Game

South Africa’s problems worsened as wickets kept falling. Jason Smith was dismissed again by Santner, continuing his poor run in the series.

Sensing an opportunity, Santner brought Sears back into the attack. Sears used short-pitched deliveries effectively and picked up key wickets, including Dian Forrester and Coetzee.

South Africa were reduced to 91 for 7 in the 13th over, and the match was effectively over. They were eventually bowled out in the 16th over, recording one of their lowest T20I totals.

New Zealand’s all-round performance ensured a comfortable win, as their fast bowlers dominated and their batters provided enough runs on the board.
