The Embassy of India in Vietnam has released an advisory for Indian travellers visiting Vietnam. It highlighted two major concerns — visa regulations for Phu Quoc Island and the risks linked to losing passports while travelling.
Visa-Free Entry to Phu Quoc Comes with Limits
Phu Quoc Island has become a popular tourist spot, mainly because it offers visa-free entry to certain foreign visitors, including Indians. However, the Embassy clarified that this exemption has strict conditions.
According to the advisory, visa-free travel is only valid for Phu Quoc Island. It does not allow entry into mainland Vietnam. This means Indian travellers cannot visit cities like Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi without obtaining a proper Vietnamese visa.

Risk in Emergency Situations
The Embassy warned that problems could arise in unexpected situations. Travellers may need to leave the island due to emergencies such as health issues, flight cancellations, or other urgent reasons.
In such cases, those without a valid visa for mainland Vietnam could face serious difficulties. These may include delays in getting medical help, restrictions on movement, and complications with immigration authorities.
“In view of the above, Indian nationals are advised to obtain an appropriate Viet Nam visa prior to undertaking travel to Phu Quoc, even if their itinerary is limited to the island,” the advisory stated.
It also added that travellers choosing to go without a visa should be ready to face possible immigration issues if they need to travel beyond the island.
Passport Loss Can Delay Return
The advisory also raised concerns about Indian travellers losing their passports in Vietnam. In such situations, individuals must immediately file a police complaint in the area where the passport was lost.
This report must then be submitted to the Embassy of India in Hanoi or the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City.
The Embassy noted that Indian authorities try to issue Emergency Certificates or travel documents quickly, often on the same day the request is made.
However, even after receiving these documents, travellers must wait for an exit permit from Vietnamese authorities. This process usually takes three to five working days, but delays are possible.
During this waiting period, Indian nationals must stay in Vietnam until they receive the required clearance to leave the country.
