Chennai Super Kings (CSK) crushed Mumbai Indians (MI) by 103 runs in the 33rd match of the IPL 2026 at Wankhede Stadium. After being invited to bat first, CSK posted a huge total of 207/6 on the scoreboard in 20 overs. Sanju Samson scored a blazing century and remained unbeaten till the end. CSK kept losing wickets at regular intervals, but Samson held one end firmly and continued attacking the MI bowlers. Allah Ghazanfar (2/25 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for Mumbai Indians, while Ashwani Kumar also picked up two wickets. Jasprit Bumrah conceded 31 runs in his 4 overs and took only one wicket.
While chasing, Mumbai Indians were bundled out for 104 in 19 overs. Akeal Hosein (4/17 in 4 overs) demolished the top order of Mumbai Indians, while Noor Ahmad (2/24 in 4 overs) dismissed Hardik Pandya and Sherfane Rutherford. Tilak Varma was the highest scorer for Mumbai Indians. With this win, CSK earned crucial points, while Mumbai Indians remain in 7th position on the points table.
High-Intensity Clash Despite Low Rankings
Both teams entered the match in poor form, sitting seventh and eighth in the points table. Still, the intensity of this rivalry was visible from the very first ball.
Early in the match, fielding errors showed signs of pressure. Sherfane Rutherford missed a simple throw to the wicketkeeper, and the backup fielder also failed to stop the ball. Jasprit Bumrah tried to calm his teammates but ended up overstepping, showing he too felt the pressure.
Later, during the chase, Tilak Varma and Jamie Overton had a brief heated exchange, highlighting the tension between the two sides.
Spin Strategy Turns the Game
Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya initially relied on pace, but CSK batters attacked strongly, scoring 38 runs in just two overs. He quickly changed tactics and introduced spin during the powerplay.
This move worked briefly, as MI picked up two wickets. However, CSK responded smartly by promoting Shivam Dube up the order. Despite that, AM Ghazanfar bowled cleverly with slower deliveries and dismissed Dube for just 5 off 8 balls. He also removed Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been struggling this season with a top score of 28 and a strike rate of 119.54. Dube, known as “Aaruchaamy” or “god of sixes”, has also had a disappointing run, hitting only five sixes in seven innings.
CSK’s Strong Start Sets the Tone
Understanding that batting first at Wankhede Stadium can be challenging, CSK batters attacked early. They scored 73 runs for 2 wickets in the powerplay, one of their best starts against MI.
When MI tried to regain control by taking two quick wickets and restricting boundaries, Dewald Brevis shifted momentum again. He smashed Mitchell Santner for two sixes, including one that made Santner’s outside-off strategy look ineffective.
This showed Brevis’ natural talent, but MI knew they needed to remove him quickly.
Momentum Swings in Middle Overs
The match saw constant shifts in momentum. There were several mistakes, including poor line and length, but both teams also showed tactical awareness.
Ashwani Kumar executed a smart plan against Brevis. After conceding boundaries, he bowled short and reduced pace. This worked perfectly, as Brevis mistimed a shot and got out for 21 off 11 balls. At that stage, CSK were 122 for 4, with limited batting left.
Samson Anchors and Finishes in Style
Sanju Samson dominated the innings with elegant strokeplay. He hit Bumrah through cover for a boundary and flicked Hardik Pandya for a six with ease. Many of his shots looked effortless, especially those guided to third man.
At one point, Samson was scoring quickly, reaching 44 off 20 balls. However, as wickets kept falling, he slowed down to protect his wicket. He scored just 15 runs off the next 14 balls and avoided taking risks.
He balanced his role perfectly—staying at the crease while ensuring the team reached a strong total. Later, he accelerated again, especially against debutant Krish Bhagat. In the 16th and 20th overs, Samson targeted him aggressively.
In the final over, Samson faced all deliveries, refused singles, and smashed 31 runs, including three sixes and three fours. This effort helped him reach his second century for CSK in just seven innings, a record for the franchise.
After his knock, MI players like Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav congratulated him. In the CSK dressing room, coach Stephen Fleming celebrated with a warm hug.
Akeal Hosein Destroys MI with Spin
Akeal Hosein played a key role with the ball. CSK had dropped him in the previous match against Sunrisers Hyderabad due to strong left-hand batters. However, MI’s left-handers did not pose the same threat.
Although Quinton de Kock hit him for a six early, Akeal quickly recovered. He bowled a wicket-maiden in the powerplay and later dismissed Tilak Varma.
He used clever angles and bowled around the wicket to trouble left-handers. Alongside Noor Ahmad, he dominated MI’s batting lineup. Together, they created immense pressure, with close fielders surrounding batters.
Spin proved to be the deciding factor, as CSK took nine wickets through spin—an IPL record at Wankhede Stadium.
