IPL 2026: CSK Register Clinical Win Over Mumbai Indians to Stay in Playoff Race
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma powered CSK to a comfortable win over MI after a disciplined bowling effort restricted them to 159.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) outclassed Mumbai Indians (MI) by 8 wickets in the 44th match of the IPL 2026 at Chepauk. After being decided to bat first, Mumbai Indians managed to score 159/7 in 20 overs. Naman Dhir played a superb knock of 57 runs off 37 balls. He built strong partnerships with Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav for the second and third wickets. When Suryakumar Yadav got out in the 11th over, Mumbai Indians were cruising at 99/3.

However, after that, CSK bowlers used the conditions well and restricted Mumbai Indians to 159. Anshul Kamboj (3/32 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for CSK, while Noor Ahmad also picked up two wickets.

While chasing, CSK lost an early wicket as Jasprit Bumrah sent Sanju Samson back to the pavilion in the second over. After that, Ruturaj Gaikwad added 49 runs with Urvil Patel for the second wicket in just the next 3.4 overs. Allah Ghazanfar got rid of Urvil Patel in the sixth over.

But Ruturaj Gaikwad had other plans. He held one end firmly and added 98 runs for the third wicket with Kartik Sharma, guiding CSK to a comfortable win with 11 balls to spare. Gaikwad remained unbeaten on 67 off 48 balls, while Kartik Sharma stayed not out on 54 off 40 balls.

Jasprit Bumrah (1/20 in 3 overs) was the most successful bowler for Mumbai Indians. With this win, CSK gained two crucial points and moved to sixth position, while Mumbai Indians slipped to ninth place on the points table.

MI’s mixed powerplay performance

Mumbai Indians started aggressively after choosing to bat first. They smashed seven sixes in the powerplay, including five from Ryan Rickelton. However, their momentum suffered due to 19 dot balls in the same phase.

Mukesh Choudhary, who missed the previous game, returned and gave away 25 runs in three powerplay overs. Meanwhile, debutant spinner Prashant Veer had a tough start. Rickelton attacked him and hit three sixes in his first over. CSK captain Gaikwad brought him in early because Akeal Hosein was not part of the playing XI. Despite the pressure, MI reached 57 for 1 in six overs, with Rickelton and Naman Dhir leading the charge.

Young CSK bowlers step up

CSK relied heavily on uncapped players in the middle overs. In fact, six of the first ten overs came from such bowlers. Although Veer recovered after a rough start, debutant pacer Ramakrishna Ghosh impressed more.

Ghosh removed Suryakumar Yadav with a sharp short-of-length delivery. The batter sliced it to Dewald Brevis at sweeper cover after scoring 21 off 12 balls. Interestingly, Gaikwad had earlier identified Ghosh as a player to watch before IPL 2025. In this match, he showed his potential by finishing with 1 for 24 in three overs.

At the same time, Noor Ahmad provided strong support. The left-arm wrist-spinner dismissed both Rickelton and Tilak Varma, keeping MI under pressure.

MI fail to maintain momentum

Mumbai Indians struggled to build on their quick start. Suryakumar Yadav continued his poor form, especially against pace. His season numbers reflect his struggle, with seven dismissals in nine innings at a low average.

Tilak Varma got an early life when dropped on 1 by Shivam Dube. However, he failed to capitalize and added only four more runs before getting out. Naman Dhir played the best innings for MI, scoring 57 off 37 balls. He began aggressively but slowed down significantly against spin. He was also dropped once on 19.

Captain Hardik Pandya could not accelerate either. He scored a slow 18 off 23 balls before getting out in the final over. Notably, after hitting seven sixes in the powerplay, MI managed only three more in the remaining 14 overs.

Gaikwad and Kartik seal easy chase

CSK’s chase began on a shaky note. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Sanju Samson in the second over. Earlier in that over, Samson had survived after an edge was dropped at slip. However, Bumrah struck again soon after, and this time the catch was taken.

After losing Samson and Urvil Patel, Gaikwad steadied the innings along with Kartik Sharma. Gaikwad attacked Trent Boult early, hitting two fours and a six in one over. He then continued his fine form and completed another half-century.

On the other end, Kartik took charge against spinner AM Ghazanfar. He scored quickly, hitting 23 runs off just 13 balls against him. Finally, Kartik finished the match in style with a reverse-scoop off Boult. The shot thrilled the 34,940 fans at Chepauk and sealed a dominant win for CSK.

Player of the Match: Ruturaj Gaikwad

Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians for the second time this season. As a result, Hardik Pandya’s team now stands on the verge of elimination. This time, CSK made better use of conditions. After misjudging pitch No. 6 in their previous match against Gujarat Titans, they chose pitch No. 5 and used it effectively.

Their bowlers stuck to tight lines and hard lengths on a slow, two-paced surface. Because of this disciplined approach, MI could only manage 159 for 7. Later, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma chased the target comfortably with unbeaten half-centuries. With this win, CSK moved to sixth place with four victories in nine matches.
