Jaishankar Begins Caribbean Tour to Boost India’s Global South Outreach
S Jaishankar’s nine-day Caribbean visit aims to strengthen historical links, expand cooperation, and deepen India’s outreach in the Global South.

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has begun a nine-day tour of the Caribbean, starting with Jamaica. He will later travel to Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

The visit will run from May 2 to May 10. It aims to strengthen India’s long-standing ties with the region and expand cooperation among countries of the Global South. On his way, Jaishankar made a brief stop in Zurich.

Focus on shared history and diaspora

A key focus of the visit is the historical link between India and the Caribbean. These countries have large communities descended from Indian indentured workers, often referred to as Girmitiya communities.

India wants to deepen this connection further. It plans to strengthen cultural ties while also expanding economic engagement with these nations.

High-level talks to cover key sectors

During the tour, Jaishankar will hold several high-level meetings with leaders in the region. These discussions will focus on trade, energy cooperation, and digital infrastructure.

India also aims to build on recent engagement with the Caribbean Community (Caricom). This reflects a broader effort to maintain political momentum in the region.

Boosting business and people ties

The visit will also highlight business and community connections. Jaishankar is expected to meet business leaders to encourage investment. At the same time, he will interact with members of the Indian diaspora.

This approach aims to strengthen both economic and people-to-people relations.

Strategic timing and global focus

The timing of the visit is significant. India will soon host the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The tour signals India’s intention to deepen partnerships across the Global South.

Key topics likely to be discussed include climate change, food security, and healthcare. India has been positioning itself as a major partner in these areas, especially through its role as the “Pharmacy of the World.”
