Panic spread among passengers on board IndiGo flight 6E108 from Hyderabad to Chandigarh on Tuesday after a suspected power bank explosion triggered smoke inside the cabin during landing.
The incident was first reported by a passenger seated at 39C around 3.50 pm. According to police sources, smoke quickly filled parts of the aircraft. The cabin crew acted immediately and tried to control the situation using a fire extinguisher.
Safe Landing and Emergency Declared
Despite the alarming situation, the aircraft landed safely at Chandigarh airport at around 4 pm. Soon after touchdown, authorities declared an emergency and directed the plane to Bay 1 for safety checks.
Emergency Evacuation and Injuries
Officials then began evacuation procedures to ensure passenger safety. Around 200 passengers, including two infants, and six crew members were on board.
At about 4.25 pm, emergency exits were opened and passengers were evacuated using inflatable slides. The rushed evacuation caused minor injuries and abrasions to several travellers.
One passenger, Richa, suffered an ankle injury during the evacuation. She was travelling with her family from Goa and is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Zirakpur.
Medical Response and Assistance
Airport authorities responded quickly by deploying ambulances. Medical teams treated passengers with minor injuries on the spot and shifted some to nearby hospitals for further care.
Awaited Official Clarification
So far, there has been no official statement explaining the exact cause of the suspected explosion. The airport police station said it has not received any formal report about the incident yet.
Chandigarh International Airport Limited is also expected to release a detailed statement on the technical reasons behind the smoke and the emergency evacuation.
