IPL 2026: Samson, Kartik Power CSK to Dominant Win Over Delhi Capitals
CSK cruised past Delhi Capitals with an 8-wicket win, powered by Samson’s 87 and a match-winning 114-run stand.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) outclassed Delhi Capitals (DC) by 8 wickets in the 48th match of IPL 2026 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. After being decided to bat first, Delhi Capitals managed 155/7 in 20 overs. CSK’s disciplined bowling attack kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Tristan Stubbs and Sameer Rizvi added 65 runs for the sixth wicket, which helped DC cross the 150-run mark. Sameer Rizvi was the top scorer for Delhi Capitals. Noor Ahmad (2/22 in 3 overs) was the most successful bowler for CSK, while Akeal Hosein (1/19 in 4 overs) delivered an impactful spell.

In reply, CSK lost a few early wickets. However, an unbeaten 114-run partnership between Sanju Samson and Kartik Sharma for the third wicket guided CSK to an easy chase with 15 balls to spare. Sanju Samson scored a blazing 87 off 52 balls, while Kartik Sharma remained unbeaten on 41 off 31 balls. Axar Patel (1/25 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for Delhi Capitals.

With this win, CSK earned two crucial points and moved ahead of Delhi Capitals in the points table.

Spinners Control the Game Early

On a slow surface, CSK bowlers made full use of the conditions. Akeal Hosein (4-0-19-1) and Noor Ahmad (3-0-22-2) led the attack with disciplined bowling.

Delhi Capitals struggled to score freely and managed only 155/7. The pitch made batting difficult early on, but it eased later, making the target easier to chase.

Slow Pitch Challenges Batters

Both teams expected a slow track, and the first few overs confirmed it. In the opening four overs, there were 15 dot balls, just six boundaries, and only three singles.

Batters like KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka found it hard to time their shots. Even well-played deliveries often went straight to fielders, forcing them to adjust their approach.

CSK Breaks Conventional Match-Ups

CSK showed bold tactics despite match-up challenges. With two right-handed openers, they introduced Akeal Hosein early.

When Nissanka got out, Delhi Capitals sent Nitish Rana to counter the left-arm spinner. However, CSK ignored the usual strategy and gave Hosein another over. He dismissed Rahul, while Rana faced just one delivery—a dot ball.

Delhi ended the powerplay at 37/2, with Hosein delivering an excellent spell.

Axar Patel’s Poor Form Continues

Axar Patel’s struggles this season continued. He has scored just 33 runs so far, with 26 coming in a single innings, and his strike rate has dropped to 97.

His wicket came during a crucial phase when Delhi needed stability. CSK picked up three wickets in 19 balls between overs 8 and 11, which significantly hurt Delhi’s total.

Rizvi and Stubbs Provide Late Push

Delhi’s top order failed to deliver, scoring only 69 runs for the first five wickets.

Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs then stepped up, adding 65 runs in 42 balls. Stubbs handled spin well, while Rizvi attacked effectively, especially against Anshul Kamboj.

Rizvi used smart footwork and varied shots to counter Kamboj, who had been one of the best death bowlers this season. In this match, however, Kamboj struggled, conceding 34 runs in just two overs without taking a wicket.

Samson Anchors Chase with Authority

Sanju Samson delivered a match-winning performance. While he had a slow start to the season—scoring just 22 runs in the first three matches—he has since been in outstanding form.

In the last seven games, Samson has scored 380 runs at an average of 95 and a strike rate of 172.

He began cautiously in this match, reaching 22 off 22 balls. But he quickly accelerated, scoring his fifty in the next 10 balls and finishing unbeaten on 87 off 52.

Pitch Improves, CSK Take Control

A brief spell of rain during the match improved batting conditions, making stroke play easier. Samson capitalised on this change and dominated both pace and spin.

He attacked Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav effectively, scoring freely against spin. His aggressive approach ensured CSK stayed ahead in the chase.

Comfortable Win Boosts CSK’s Campaign

Kartik Sharma supported Samson well with 41 off 31 balls. Together, they guided CSK to victory with 15 balls to spare. Interestingly, CSK did not even need to use their Impact Player, effectively winning with 11 players against 12.

This victory also gave CSK a valuable boost in net run rate, which could play a crucial role as the tournament approaches the playoff stage. Chennai Super Kings entered IPL 2026 with serious concerns around their bowling. In their first three matches, they lost all games and their bowlers conceded 588 runs for just 10 wickets at a poor economy rate of 11.37.

However, things have changed sharply since then. In the last seven matches, CSK bowlers have taken 51 wickets—second only to Gujarat Titans (52)—while maintaining an outstanding economy rate of 8.15, the best in the league. Chennai Super Kings entered IPL 2026 with serious concerns around their bowling.
