Suvendu Adhikari Set to Become West Bengal’s Ninth Chief Minister
Suvendu Adhikari was unanimously elected BJP legislature party leader, paving the way for him to become the next Chief Minister of West Bengal.

Suvendu Adhikari was unanimously elected as the BJP legislature party leader on Friday during a meeting of newly elected MLAs held in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The decision cleared the path for Adhikari to become the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal.

After a closed-door meeting that lasted around 30 minutes, Shah officially announced Adhikari’s selection.

“Eight proposals were received at the meeting and all of them had only one name. Adequate time was given for a second name, but no other name was proposed. Therefore, I announce Suvendu Adhikari as the chief minister of Bengal,” Shah said.

BJP Sees Decision as Major Political Milestone

Senior BJP leaders described Adhikari’s elevation as a major political achievement for the party and also a personal success for Amit Shah. Shah had played a key role in bringing Adhikari from the Trinamool Congress to the BJP in 2020, a move that significantly strengthened the BJP’s presence in West Bengal politics.

Adhikari Meets Governor to Stake Claim

Soon after the announcement, Adhikari met RN Ravi and formally staked claim to form the next government in the state. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at Brigade Parade Grounds at 10 am on Saturday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several senior Union ministers, and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states are expected to attend the event.

Second Chief Minister From Midnapore

Adhikari will become the second Chief Minister from the Midnapore region after Ajoy Mukherjee. While announcing the new leadership, Shah said the BJP government under Adhikari would focus on building “Sonar Bangla” through development, better infrastructure and good governance.

Amit Shah Praises Adhikari’s Political Journey

Shah praised Adhikari’s leadership skills and political struggle, saying he has both administrative experience and fighting spirit.

“I have known Suvendu for long. He is a fighter and has been in administration, too. He, along with our team, will be successful in delivering good governance in Bengal. He has fought, and his fight has brought results today,” Shah said.
