Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are likely to attend the swearing-in ceremony of West Bengal’s first BJP government on May 9. The update comes from a PTI report quoting state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya.
“The new BJP government will take oath on May 9 at 10 am at Brigade Parade Ground,” Bhattacharya told reporters.
Ceremony Aligned with Cultural Occasion
Significantly, the BJP has chosen a culturally important day for the ceremony. The event will take place on the 25th day of Baisakh, which the state celebrates as Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. As a result, the ceremony carries strong cultural meaning beyond politics.
BJP Sends a Political Message
At the same time, the choice of date reflects a clear political strategy. According to party sources, the BJP wants to connect its historic win with Bengal’s cultural identity. Moreover, the move aims to counter the Trinamool Congress narrative that portrays the BJP as a “party of outsiders” disconnected from the state’s language and intellectual traditions.
Therefore, by linking the swearing-in with a major cultural occasion, the BJP seeks to strengthen its roots in Bengal and reshape its image among the people.
