Rubio Travels to China With Donald Trump Amid Sanctions Row
Marco Rubio travelled to Beijing with Donald Trump after China reportedly used a diplomatic loophole to bypass sanctions imposed on him ahead of key trade and security talks.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio travelled to Beijing with President Donald Trump despite remaining under Chinese sanctions. The visit marked a major moment in US-China relations. China reportedly found an unusual diplomatic workaround to allow Rubio’s entry without officially removing the sanctions imposed on him.

Chinese authorities quietly changed the Chinese transliteration of Rubio’s surname in official documents before the visit. The move reportedly helped Beijing bypass the earlier entry restrictions linked to his original Chinese name.

China Creates Diplomatic Loophole

China sanctioned Rubio twice in 2020 when he served as a US senator. Beijing targeted him for strongly criticising its policies in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. The sanctions reportedly included an entry ban.

However, shortly before Rubio became Secretary of State in January 2025, Chinese state agencies and official media started using a different Chinese character for the “Lu” syllable in his surname.

The change reportedly created a technical loophole that allowed Rubio to visit China without Beijing formally lifting sanctions. Chinese officials earlier suggested the sanctions applied to Rubio’s actions as a senator and not his current diplomatic role. Rubio later boarded Air Force One with Trump for the Beijing visit.

Rubio’s Outfit Creates Online Buzz

During the flight, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung shared a photo of Rubio relaxing on Air Force One in a grey Nike Tech tracksuit.

Many social media users quickly noticed that the outfit closely resembled clothing worn earlier by former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro during his reported capture by US-backed forces. The White House later posted the image with the caption “Full circle moment.”

Supporters praised the post and linked it to the Trump administration’s Latin America policies. Critics, however, called it an unusual gesture ahead of high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Trade Talks Lead Beijing Agenda

Trump and Rubio are expected to hold major meetings with Xi Jinping during the visit. Trade discussions will dominate the agenda as both countries try to reduce tensions after tariff battles pushed duties as high as 140 percent.

Both sides are also discussing the creation of a new “Board of Trade” to handle disputes and reduce tariff conflicts. Trump’s delegation includes major American business leaders such as Elon Musk and Tim Cook.

The US delegation hopes to secure major Chinese purchases involving soybeans, Boeing aircraft and technology products.

Strait of Hormuz and Taiwan Discussions

The talks will also focus on rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington wants Beijing to reduce imports of Iranian oil and support efforts to secure shipping routes in the Gulf.

Leaders are also expected to discuss a possible trilateral nuclear arms agreement involving the United States, China and Russia. Another major issue will be the proposed $11 billion US weapons package for Taiwan, which continues to strain relations between Washington and Beijing.
