Mumbai Indians (MI) edged past Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six wickets with one ball to spare in the 58th match of IPL 2026 in Dharamshala. Jasprit Bumrah captained MI for the first time in IPL history in the absence of Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav. After being invited to bat first, Punjab Kings posted 200/8 in 20 overs.
Prabhsimran Singh gave PBKS a flying start with an aggressive knock of 57 off just 32 balls. The hosts raced to 100 within 11 overs. However, Shardul Thakur (4/39 in 4 overs) brought Mumbai Indians back into the match with a brilliant spell that triggered a batting collapse. Punjab Kings slipped to 140/7 in the 17th over before a late counterattack from Azmatullah Omarzai, Xavier Bartlett, and Impact Player Vishnu Vinod lifted them to 200/8.
In reply, Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma gave Mumbai a blazing start. They added 61 runs for the first wicket in 6.3 overs before Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal in the seventh over. Rohit scored 25 runs, while Rickelton smashed 48 off just 23 balls. However, the chase truly belonged to Tilak Varma, who hammered an unbeaten 75 off just 33 deliveries. Alongside Will Jacks, Tilak guided MI home on the penultimate ball of the match after the visitors needed 50 runs from the final three overs. Azmatullah Omarzai (2/36 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for Punjab Kings. With this win, Mumbai Indians earned two crucial points, while Punjab Kings remained in fourth position in the points table with 13 points.
Punjab Kings Start Carefully Without Big Hits
Punjab Kings began steadily but lacked six-hitting during the powerplay. Priyansh Arya opened his scoring with a boundary off Deepak Chahar, while Prabhsimran struck two fours against Bumrah in the next over.
The opening pair managed ten boundaries in the powerplay, but dot balls slowed the momentum and they failed to clear the ropes even once. Chahar eventually broke the stand by bowling Arya with a knuckleball in the last over of the powerplay. PBKS reached 55 for 1 after six overs.
Prabhsimran Makes MI Pay for Missed Chances
Prabhsimran survived two dropped catches early in his innings. He was first put down on 5 by Naman Dhir off Bumrah’s bowling and later got another lifeline on 28 when Corbin Bosch failed to hold onto a return catch.
The PBKS opener took full advantage of those chances. He attacked spinner Raghu Sharma with consecutive slog-swept sixes and completed his half-century in only 29 balls as Punjab crossed the 100-run mark comfortably.
Shardul Sparks Massive Collapse
Just when PBKS appeared in complete control, Shardul turned the game around in dramatic fashion.
Using cross-seam deliveries effectively, he dismissed Prabhsimran in the 12th over after forcing a mistimed shot to deep third. Two balls later, another sharp delivery straightened and crashed into the off stump of PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer.
At the other end, Raj Bawa removed Cooper Connolly for 21 off 22 balls. Shardul continued his domination by dismissing Suryansh Shedge and Marco Jansen soon after. PBKS crashed from a strong position to 140 for 7 in 16.2 overs.
Omarzai and Lower Order Revive Punjab Kings
Punjab’s innings looked finished at that stage, prompting the team management to introduce Vishnu Vinod as the Impact Player. The move worked immediately.
Omarzai launched a fierce counterattack, hammering four sixes and two boundaries during his quickfire 38 from 17 balls. Vinod then added useful late runs with 15 not out from eight deliveries, while Bartlett blasted 18 not out off just seven balls.
The unbeaten ninth-wicket partnership added 34 runs in only 12 deliveries and pushed PBKS to a competitive total of 200.
Rickelton Gives Mumbai Indians Explosive Start
PBKS pacer Arshdeep Singh started strongly by conceding only two runs in the opening over. But Rickelton soon shifted momentum firmly towards Mumbai.
The left-hander targeted the leg side aggressively. Out of his 48 runs, 34 came on that side of the field, including all four of his sixes. MI scored 59 runs in the powerplay, with Rickelton alone contributing 47 of them. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma struggled to find rhythm and crawled to 12 off 15 balls.
Punjab Kings Fight Back in Middle Overs
Punjab bounced back impressively after the powerplay. Omarzai removed Rickelton, Jansen dismissed Dhir, and veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal bowled Rohit to reduce MI to 89 for 3 after ten overs.
Tilak kept MI in the chase with regular boundaries and quickly moved to 22 off 11 balls. However, PBKS bowlers kept Sherfane Rutherford under pressure.
Jansen gave away only five singles in the 14th over, while Arshdeep conceded just eight runs in the 15th. At that point, Mumbai still needed 72 runs from the final five overs.
Tilak and Jacks Finish the Job
PBKS captain Iyer attempted to use Chahal against two left-hand batters, but the move backfired badly. Tilak and Rutherford smashed one six each in a costly 20-run over.
Omarzai responded brilliantly in the 17th over by dismissing Rutherford and conceding only two runs. With MI requiring 50 runs from the last three overs, Punjab looked ahead in the contest. However, their bowlers failed to hold their nerve under pressure.
Jacks and Tilak attacked Jansen in the 18th over, hitting two sixes and two fours to swing momentum decisively towards Mumbai.
Arshdeep left Bartlett with 14 runs to defend in the final over. But Bartlett began poorly with a full toss that Jacks launched over long-off for six. After a single and a dot ball, MI still needed eight runs from three deliveries.
Tilak stayed calm under pressure and finished the chase in style by smashing back-to-back sixes, sealing a dramatic victory for Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai Indians, although already out of the playoff race, made the road to the playoffs more difficult for the other teams. MI entered the game without regular captain Hardik Pandya, who is recovering from back spasms, and stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who missed the match due to personal reasons. In their absence, star pacer Jasprit Bumrah captained MI for the first time in IPL history and led the team to victory.
Punjab Kings saw their chances of reaching the IPL playoffs weaken further after suffering a six-wicket defeat against Mumbai Indians in Dharamsala. The loss marked PBKS’ fifth consecutive defeat this season. Despite the setback, they remain fourth in the points table with 13 points from 12 matches. However, both Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are close behind with 12 points each and still have one match left to play. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
