Trump Revives Mount Rushmore Debate With AI-Generated Image
US President Donald Trump reignited debate over Mount Rushmore after sharing an AI-generated image showing himself alongside the four presidents immortalised on the iconic monument.

US President Donald Trump has reignited discussion about his place in American history after sharing an AI-generated image that depicts him alongside the four presidents carved into the famous Mount Rushmore monument.

Trump posted the image on his social media platform, Truth Social, without any caption or explanation. The picture shows him standing beside four of America's most well-known presidents—George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln—whose faces are carved into the granite mountain in South Dakota.

The post is the latest example of Trump's growing use of artificial intelligence-generated images on social media. In recent months, he has frequently shared digitally created pictures portraying himself in dramatic and symbolic settings.

A Long-Held Ambition

The idea of adding Trump to Mount Rushmore is not new. The discussion dates back to 2018 when South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem met Trump in the Oval Office. Noem later revealed that Trump told her it was his “dream” to have his face carved onto the historic monument.

The story gained national attention, and Trump later addressed it during a 2020 campaign event. He accused the media of misrepresenting the conversation to make him appear self-promotional.

At the same time, Trump argued that the accomplishments of his administration justified consideration for inclusion on the monument.

The Meaning Behind Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore was designed by sculptor Gutzon Borglum to represent the first 150 years of American history.

Each president was chosen for a specific reason. George Washington symbolises the founding of the United States. Thomas Jefferson represents the nation's expansion through the Louisiana Purchase. Theodore Roosevelt reflects economic growth and national development. Abraham Lincoln symbolises the preservation of the Union during the Civil War.

Together, the four figures were intended to tell the story of America's growth and development.

Political Allies Push the Idea Forward

What began as a personal wish has gradually received support from some of Trump's political allies. Several lawmakers have backed proposals to add Trump's likeness to Mount Rushmore. Among them is Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna, who previously introduced legislation directing the Department of the Interior to explore the possibility of carving Trump's image onto the monument.

Supporters have argued that Trump deserves recognition for his impact on American politics and governance.

Questions Over Space and Feasibility

The proposal has also gained attention from senior government officials. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has publicly suggested that the Black Hills site may still have enough physical space to accommodate another presidential face if such a decision were ever approved.

While experts have long debated the practicality of altering the monument, supporters continue to raise the possibility of expansion.

AI Images Draw Criticism

Trump's use of AI-generated images has sparked criticism from misinformation researchers and media experts. Critics argue that when public officials share altered or artificial images, it can blur the distinction between reality and fiction. They warn that such content may make it harder for people to determine what is real and what has been digitally created.

The White House and Trump supporters, however, have defended the posts. They argue that the images are intended as memes and social media content designed to engage supporters online.

Despite the criticism, the administration has continued to embrace AI-generated content as part of its digital communication strategy.

Renewed Debate

Trump's latest post has once again fueled debate over whether he should someday join the ranks of the presidents honoured on Mount Rushmore. While there are currently no official plans to alter the monument, the image has revived a conversation that has followed Trump for years and continues to divide public opinion.
