Scotland Women Begin T20 World Cup Campaign with Historic Win Over Ireland
Scotland Women secured their first-ever Women's T20 World Cup victory as the Bryce sisters starred in a 40-run win over Ireland with brilliant performances in both batting and bowling.

Scotland Women outclassed Ireland Women by 40 runs in the second match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup at Stretford. After being invited to bat first, Scotland Women posted 161/5 in their 20 overs. They lost two early wickets during the powerplay. However, Kathryn Bryce and Sarah Bryce added 106 runs for the third wicket and helped Scotland cross the 160-run mark. Ava Canning (3/27 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for Ireland Women, while Aimee Maguire and Arlene Kelly took one wicket each.

In reply, Ireland Women never looked comfortable during the chase. Amy Hunter and Orla Prendergast kept the innings steady against Scotland's disciplined bowling attack until the 12th over. However, Kirstie Gordon (3/16 in 4 overs), Katherine Fraser (3/19 in 4 overs), and Kathryn Bryce (2/19 in 3.1 overs) ripped through the Ireland batting lineup. Ireland Women were eventually bowled out for 121 with five balls remaining. Scotland Women started their World Cup campaign in style. It was a historic victory and their first-ever win at a Women's T20 World Cup.

Ireland Make Early Inroads

Ireland chose to bowl first on a windy and cloudy day in Manchester. Left-arm spinner Aimee Maguire opened the attack and immediately troubled Scotland’s batters with turn and drift.

Darcey Carter and Fraser struggled to settle. Although Carter eased some pressure with a boundary over long-on, Ireland’s bowlers kept things tight. Arlene Kelly and Ava Canning maintained control and restricted scoring opportunities.

The difficult pitch and slow outfield made stroke-making challenging. Soon, Canning struck the first blow when Fraser mistimed a shot to deep midwicket, where Alice Tector completed an excellent catch.

Maguire then removed Carter by sneaking a full delivery under her bat and hitting the stumps. Scotland reached only 37 for 2 at the end of the powerplay after scoring just nine runs in the final two overs.

Bryce Sisters Rescue Scotland

With Scotland under pressure, Sarah Bryce and Kathryn Bryce rebuilt the innings brilliantly. The pair rotated the strike well and gradually shifted momentum in Scotland’s favour.

Kathryn got an early boundary with a bit of fortune when a misjudged effort in the deep allowed the ball to cross the rope.

Soon after, Sarah attacked leg-spinner Cara Murray. She smashed two fours and a huge six in an over that produced 20 runs. The partnership also became Scotland’s first fifty-run stand in Women’s T20 World Cup history.

Kathryn then joined the attack. She hit Maguire for two boundaries and continued to find gaps regularly. Her aggressive approach helped her reach her 12th T20I half-century from just 32 balls.

Sarah also looked set for a fifty but fell for 49 after edging behind while attempting a cut shot. The sisters added a vital 106 runs together, giving Scotland a strong platform.

Kathryn Leads Scotland to 161

Ireland fought back well in the closing overs. The bowlers conceded only 19 runs in the last four overs. Ava Canning delivered an excellent 19th over and removed Kathryn, who had played a superb innings of 60 from 39 balls.

Despite the late slowdown, Scotland finished on 161 for 5, a total that looked competitive in the conditions.

Scotland Strike Early in the Chase

Ireland began their chase positively. Alana Dalzell drove Kathryn Bryce through mid-on for a boundary in the opening over. However, Kathryn responded immediately. She grabbed a sharp return catch to dismiss Dalzell at the end of the same over.

Ireland then rebuilt through Amy Hunter and captain Gaby Lewis. Hunter played several attractive shots and collected boundaries, while Lewis struggled to score freely.

Fraser eventually broke the partnership by stumping Lewis for 11 from 19 balls. At the halfway stage, Ireland reached 58 for 2, but the required run rate had already climbed above ten runs per over.

Fraser and Gordon Turn the Match

Amy Hunter remained Ireland’s main hope and continued to attack. However, Fraser returned to bowl her for 39 in the 12th over. That wicket opened the door for Scotland’s bowlers.

Kirstie Gordon then produced the decisive spell of the match. The spinner, who has represented both England and Scotland at the T20 World Cup, ripped through Ireland’s middle order. In a sensational 13th over, she claimed three wickets.

First, she bowled Rebecca Stokell. Then she dismissed Leah Paul with a simple return catch. Moments later, Alice Tector also fell, leaving Gordon on a hat-trick and Ireland reeling at 70 for 6.

Ireland’s Hopes Fade Away

Orla Prendergast tried to keep Ireland in the contest. She struck boundaries regularly and continued to fight despite the rising required run rate. By the end of the 15th over, Ireland needed more than 15 runs per over.

Prendergast briefly raised hopes with a six and a four in the 17th over. However, disaster followed on the next ball when she was run out while attempting a risky single. Her dismissal effectively ended Ireland’s chances.

Scotland Seal Historic Victory

Fraser added two more wickets in the 18th over to tighten Scotland’s grip on the match. Finally, Maguire became the last batter to fall on the first ball of the 20th over as Ireland were bowled out for 121.

Scotland completed a memorable 40-run victory and celebrated a landmark moment in their cricket history. The win marked their first-ever success in the Women’s T20 World Cup and showcased both their batting depth and bowling strength on the global stage.

The Bryce sisters, Sarah Bryce and Kathryn Bryce, played key roles with the bat. Their century partnership helped Scotland post a competitive total. Later, spinners Katherine Fraser and Kirstie Gordon dominated with the ball as Ireland collapsed for 121.

The result also extended Ireland’s poor record in the tournament. They are still searching for their first win after 18 Women’s T20 World Cup matches. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
