Australia Women outclassed South Africa Women by 65 runs in the third match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 at Stretford. After being decided to bat first, Australia Women posted 172/8 on the scoreboard in their 20 overs. After losing two quick wickets in the first four overs, Phoebe Litchfield, Ellyse Perry and Georgia Wareham helped Australia cross the 150-run mark. Litchfield scored a superb half-century.
Nonkululeko Mlaba (2/22 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for South Africa Women, while Ayabonga Khaka and Nadine de Klerk picked up two wickets each.
In reply, South Africa Women lost three quick wickets within the first seven overs. Laura Wolvaardt and Nadine de Klerk attempted to rebuild the innings and played fighting knocks, but their efforts were not enough. When Sophie Molineux (2/17 in 3 overs) dismissed Wolvaardt in the 14th over, Georgia Wareham (3/13 in 2.4 overs) and Alana King (2/26 in 4 overs) wrapped up the innings quickly. South Africa Women were bowled out for 107 in 16.4 overs. Kim Garth and Ashleigh Gardner also claimed one wicket each. Wolvaardt remained the top scorer for South Africa Women.
With this victory, Australia Women started their campaign on a high note.
Litchfield Powers Australia After Early Setbacks
South Africa's experienced pace duo of Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail started strongly after captain Laura Wolvaardt chose to bowl first. The pair removed Australia's openers inside the first four overs and kept the scoring rate under control with disciplined bowling and subtle movement.
However, Phoebe Litchfield quickly changed the momentum. The left-hander attacked Kapp by stepping out and hitting consecutive boundaries near the end of the powerplay. She then took on Ismail in the next over, smashing two fours and a six to lift Australia's scoring rate.
Australia finished the powerplay at 52 for 2 thanks largely to Litchfield's aggressive batting. Playing her first competitive match of the tournament after missing a warm-up game with a quadricep injury, Litchfield raced to a half-century in just 23 balls.
Ayabonga Khaka eventually dismissed her for a brilliant 50 from 24 deliveries. At that stage, the rest of Australia's batters had contributed only 11 runs between them.
Wareham and Perry Strengthen Australia's Position
After Litchfield's dismissal, Ellyse Perry and Georgia Wareham continued the momentum. Wareham attacked from the start and found the boundary regularly. Perry gradually settled into her innings before both batters launched an assault on Khaka during the 12th over, collecting three boundaries each.
Their partnership added 58 runs from only 38 balls and pushed Australia towards a strong total. Wareham's entertaining innings ended when Wolvaardt produced a stunning catch at extra cover to dismiss her for 32 from 22 balls.
Two overs later, Perry departed after scoring 36 from 26 deliveries. Although Australia lost wickets at regular intervals, the middle-order contributions ensured the team maintained a healthy scoring rate.
Mlaba Impresses Despite South Africa's Struggles
Left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba was South Africa's standout performer with the ball. She struck with only her second delivery by removing Ashleigh Gardner, who mistimed an attacking shot and picked out a fielder.
Mlaba later dismissed the well-set Perry and kept Australia's scoring under some control during the middle overs. Her performance once again highlighted her importance to South Africa's bowling attack. Since the start of 2024, she has been the team's leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals with 41 wickets.
However, her efforts could not prevent Australia from posting a challenging total.
Australian Spinners Dominate the Chase
Australia made a tactical change at the start of South Africa's innings by handing the new ball to spinner Sophie Molineux. The move paid off immediately. Molineux trapped Sune Luus lbw in the opening over, while Kim Garth removed Annerie Dercksen soon after to put South Africa under pressure.
Recognising that South Africa's batters enjoy pace on the ball, Australia relied heavily on spin throughout the innings. Molineux rotated her bowlers smartly, and the pace attack delivered only four overs in total.
South Africa Fail to Recover
South Africa struggled to build partnerships against Australia's disciplined spin attack. Nadine de Klerk briefly threatened to counterattack, but Georgia Wareham eventually dismissed her and later added two more wickets to her tally.
Captain Laura Wolvaardt tried to anchor the innings, but Molineux returned to remove her as the required run rate continued to climb. From there, South Africa's chase lost momentum completely.
Australia's spinners dominated the match, claiming eight wickets for 72 runs in 12.4 overs. Their accuracy and variety left South Africa with no way back into the contest.
Australia Send Strong Early Warning
South Africa were eventually bowled out for 107, their second-lowest completed T20I total against Australia. The convincing victory underlined Australia's strength in both batting and bowling. Litchfield provided the spark with the bat, while the spinners ensured complete control during the chase.
Australia started their Women's T20 World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion and reminded every team in the tournament why they remain one of the biggest threats for the title.
