Israeli Strikes Kill Three in Southern Lebanon Hours After US-Iran Agreement Is Signed
Fresh Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed at least three people just hours after the US and Iran signed a peace memorandum, highlighting ongoing tensions as Israel insists it will continue military operations inside its self-declared security zone.

At least three people were killed in fresh Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon on Thursday, only hours after US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian digitally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at ending military hostilities across the region. The strikes highlighted the challenges facing the newly announced agreement, which calls for an immediate halt to military operations, including those linked to Lebanon.

Israel Says Military Operations in Southern Lebanon Will Continue

Despite the signing of the agreement, the Israeli military made it clear that it intends to continue operations in southern Lebanon. Israeli officials said forces would remain active beyond what they described as a security zone and would continue working to “remove threats" in the area. The military also released a map showing its designated security zone, which extends around 10 kilometres (six miles) inside Lebanese territory. According to Israeli authorities, troops will stay deployed in the zone “to remove threats and strengthen the defence of Israel’s northern residents". Israeli officials also urged Lebanese civilians to avoid entering the area and called on the Lebanese Armed Forces to coordinate their activities with Israeli forces.

Casualties Reported on Both Sides

Shortly after the agreement was signed, Lebanese state media reported that one person was killed in an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, the Israeli military announced that one of its soldiers had been killed during an incident in southern Lebanon the previous night. The same incident also left seven other Israeli soldiers wounded. The developments underscored the continuing tensions along the border despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.

US-Iran Memorandum Calls for End to Military Operations

The United States and Iran formally signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Thursday. The document states that both sides agree to the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon. It also commits both countries to refrain from launching future wars or military actions against one another. The agreement is expected to serve as the foundation for a final peace deal that would formally end hostilities across multiple conflict zones in the region, including Lebanon.

How Lebanon Became Part of the Wider Conflict

Lebanon became increasingly involved in the regional conflict after Hezbollah, the Iran-backed armed group, launched attacks against Israel in March. The attacks were carried out in response to the killing of Iran’s supreme leader during the US-Israeli military campaign.

Israel responded with extensive air strikes across Lebanon and later launched a ground operation in southern Lebanon, an area where Hezbollah has long maintained significant influence. The escalation transformed Lebanon into one of the key fronts in the broader regional confrontation.

Lebanon and Israel Continue Ceasefire Efforts

Since April, Lebanon and Israel have been engaged in direct talks in Washington aimed at ending hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah and preventing the conflict from becoming further tied to the wider regional war. Recent negotiations produced a significant diplomatic breakthrough. Following two days of high-level trilateral discussions hosted by the United States, Israel and Lebanon agreed to move forward with a ceasefire framework. According to a joint statement issued by the United States, Lebanon and Israel, the ceasefire depends on a complete end to Hezbollah attacks and the withdrawal of all Hezbollah operatives from areas south of the Litani River.

Uncertainty Remains Despite Diplomatic Progress

Although the US-Iran agreement and ongoing ceasefire negotiations have raised hopes of reducing violence, the latest strikes in southern Lebanon demonstrate that tensions remain high. Israel's decision to continue military operations inside its declared security zone and the ongoing security concerns on both sides suggest that achieving a lasting peace will remain a difficult challenge. For now, diplomatic efforts continue, but the situation on the ground shows that the path toward stability in the region remains uncertain.
