FIFA World Cup 2026: Cape Verde Make History with Dramatic 2-2 Draw Against Uruguay
Cape Verde scored their first-ever World Cup goals and fought back to earn a historic 2-2 draw against Uruguay, keeping their knockout-stage hopes alive in Group H.

Cape Verde continued their remarkable debut FIFA World Cup campaign by holding two-time champions Uruguay to a thrilling 2-2 draw at Miami Stadium. The result earned the African nation a second consecutive point in Group H and kept their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

After frustrating Spain with a goalless draw in their opening match, Cape Verde once again proved they belong on football's biggest stage. This time, they made even more history by scoring their first-ever FIFA World Cup goals and battling back from behind against one of the tournament's traditional powerhouses.

For Uruguay, another draw leaves qualification hanging in the balance ahead of a difficult final group-stage clash against Spain.

Cape Verde Continue Their Fairytale Journey

The contrast between the two teams could hardly have been greater.

Uruguay arrived as former world champions, having lifted the World Cup in 1930 and 1950. Cape Verde, meanwhile, were making their first appearance at the tournament and represent a nation of just over 500,000 people.

Despite the difference in experience and history, Cape Verde once again showed tremendous organization, determination, and confidence throughout the contest.

Uruguay dominated possession and controlled much of the play, but Cape Verde's discipline and belief allowed them to compete on equal terms.

Kevin Pina Creates History with Stunning Free-Kick

Uruguay controlled possession during the opening stages and looked comfortable on the ball.

However, Cape Verde stunned their opponents in the 21st minute with a moment that instantly entered the nation's football history.

After winning a free-kick more than 30 metres from goal, midfielder Kevin Pina stepped up and unleashed a magnificent strike from 32 metres. The powerful effort curled beyond the goalkeeper and into the net.

The spectacular goal became Cape Verde's first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup.

Players and supporters celebrated wildly as the underdogs took a shock lead against one of football's most respected nations.

Uruguay Fight Back Before Half-Time

The goal forced Uruguay to raise their intensity.

Marcelo Bielsa's side pushed forward aggressively and began to pin Cape Verde deep inside their own half.

Their pressure finally paid off in the 43rd minute when Maximiliano Araújo found space inside the penalty area and fired home the equaliser.

The goal shifted momentum firmly in Uruguay's favour.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Uruguay completed the turnaround. Agustín Canobbio reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box and poked it into the net to give his side a 2-1 lead heading into the break.

At that stage, Uruguay appeared to be on course for a vital victory.

Varela Punishes Defensive Error

Cape Verde refused to give up.

The tournament newcomers returned for the second half with renewed determination and found a way back into the contest in the 60th minute.

A misunderstanding between defender Matías Olivera and veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera created confusion inside the Uruguayan penalty area.

The loose ball fell kindly for Hélio Varela, who reacted quickly and calmly slotted the ball into the net.

The goal was Varela's first for his national team and restored parity at 2-2.

More importantly, it reignited belief among the Cape Verde players and supporters.

Cape Verde Stand Firm Under Heavy Pressure

Following the equaliser, Uruguay launched wave after wave of attacks in search of a winning goal.

The South Americans finished the match with 66 percent possession, 16 shots, and seven efforts on target. Cape Verde managed only five shots and three on target but defended heroically throughout the final half hour.

Every tackle, interception, and clearance became increasingly important as Uruguay intensified their search for victory.

Cape Verde's defensive organization once again proved exceptional, frustrating their more experienced opponents and preventing clear scoring opportunities.

VAR Denies Uruguay Late Winner

The drama increased during the closing stages when Uruguay believed they had found the winning goal.

Celebrations were short-lived, however, as VAR intervened and ruled the effort out.

The decision preserved the deadlock and handed Cape Verde another lifeline.

Uruguay continued to push forward, but Cape Verde remained disciplined and resilient until the final whistle.

When the match ended, the Cape Verde players celebrated enthusiastically, recognizing the significance of another historic result.

Group H Set for Dramatic Finale

The draw leaves Group H perfectly balanced heading into the final round of matches.

Spain's convincing 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia earlier in the day moved them to the top of the group with four points.

Uruguay and Cape Verde are both unbeaten and sit level on two points after two matches.

Saudi Arabia remain bottom with one point but still have a chance of progressing.

The final group games promise plenty of drama.

Uruguay face a difficult encounter against Spain and may need a victory to guarantee qualification for the Round of 32.

Cape Verde, meanwhile, will meet Saudi Arabia knowing that a win could complete one of the greatest stories of the tournament and secure a historic place in the knockout rounds.

Cape Verde Continue to Defy Expectations

Few expected Cape Verde to make such an impact at their first World Cup.

Against Spain, they showed they could compete with elite opposition. Against Uruguay, they proved that performance was no fluke.

With two impressive results against former world champions and European heavyweights, Cape Verde have become one of the surprise packages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and remain firmly in the race for qualification.
