Cristiano Ronaldo Makes World Cup History as Portugal Thrash Uzbekistan 5-0
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in Portugal’s 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, becoming the first player to score in six World Cups and the country's all-time leading World Cup goalscorer.

Cristiano Ronaldo made history on Wednesday by becoming the first player to score in six FIFA World Cups. The Portugal captain scored twice in a dominant 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in Group K, helping his team move closer to the knockout stage.

The 41-year-old also became Portugal’s highest scorer in World Cup history. His two goals took his World Cup tally to 10, moving him ahead of legendary Portuguese striker Eusebio on the country's all-time scoring list at the tournament.

The match, played in Houston, saw Portugal deliver a much-improved performance after their disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening game.

Ronaldo Ends Goal Drought in Style

Ronaldo entered the match under pressure after failing to score in his previous 10 appearances in major international finals. Critics had questioned whether the veteran forward still deserved a place in Portugal’s starting lineup. He answered those doubts emphatically with a clinical display in front of goal.

After the final whistle, an emotional Ronaldo celebrated by shouting, "I'm back, I'm back" into television cameras. The goals not only ended his scoring drought but also cemented his place in football history.

Portugal Dominate From the Start

Portugal played with urgency from the opening whistle as they looked to bounce back from their frustrating first match. The team moved the ball quickly and created chances throughout the contest. Their attacking approach overwhelmed Uzbekistan, who struggled to cope with Portugal’s movement and quality.

Portugal finished the match with 17 shots, including eight on target, and constantly looked for opportunities to add more goals. The players also tried repeatedly to help Ronaldo complete a hat-trick, but he was unable to convert several additional chances.

Ronaldo Strikes Twice

Portugal took the lead in the sixth minute. Ronaldo finished neatly from close range after meeting a low cross from Joao Cancelo at the near post. The goal brought visible relief to the Portuguese captain. He sprinted toward the touchline to celebrate while teammates surrounded him. On the sidelines, coach Roberto Martinez watched with a smile as his players celebrated.

Ronaldo added his second goal later in the match when he latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Bruno Fernandes and calmly placed the ball into the far corner. The brace took his World Cup total to 10 goals and placed him alone at the top of Portugal’s World Cup scoring charts.

Ronaldo Focuses on Team Success

Despite reaching another major milestone, Ronaldo insisted that the team's progress mattered more than personal records. "The team performed really well and improved a lot," he said. "As the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining. Obviously, speaking personally, records are always nice but my goal is always to help the national team achieve its objectives."

His comments reflected Portugal’s determination to make a deep run in the tournament.

Nuno Mendes Adds a Moment of Magic

Portugal's second goal came from an inventive free kick by Nuno Mendes. Ronaldo acted as a decoy while Mendes quickly took the set piece. The unexpected strike fooled goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov and caught much of the crowd by surprise.

The goal gave Portugal complete control of the match before Ronaldo added his second.

Uzbekistan Denied by VAR

Uzbekistan thought they had pulled a goal back after the first hydration break. Azizjon Ganiev produced an impressive finish that briefly gave his team hope. However, a VAR review found a foul on Cancelo during the build-up, and the goal was ruled out. The decision left Uzbekistan trailing and struggling to mount a comeback.

Portugal Finish Strong

Portugal continued to dominate after halftime. Uzbekistan's goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov endured an unfortunate moment when he accidentally fumbled the ball into his own net, gifting Portugal a fourth goal.

Later, Rafael Leao added a fifth to complete the rout in front of a crowd of 68,777 spectators. With the result already secure, Portugal eased their intensity slightly during the closing stages but remained firmly in control throughout.

Martinez Praises Team’s Growth

Coach Roberto Martinez said the performance showed how much the team had learned from its opening match. "This was the response we had in the dressing room," Martinez said. "There are times when you need a game like the first one in order to grow in the tournament."

"Today we saw a team with the same attitude and commitment, but with greater maturity because it was no longer the opening match."

The coach highlighted the team's improved decision-making and finishing as key reasons behind the convincing victory.

Portugal Near Knockout Stage

The win moved Portugal to four points from two matches and strengthened their position in Group K. They will face Colombia in their final group-stage match, while Uzbekistan, still without a point, will take on DR Congo and need a positive result to avoid elimination.

For Portugal, the night belonged to Ronaldo. The veteran striker silenced his critics, broke another record, and reminded the football world why he remains one of the game's greatest players.
