Switzerland secured first place in Group B and booked their spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 with a 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada in Vancouver. Goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi early in the second half proved enough for the Swiss side, who continued their impressive World Cup consistency by reaching the knockout stage for the fourth consecutive tournament.
The win ensured Switzerland finished at the top of the group standings and will remain in Vancouver for their Round of 32 clash on July 3 against one of the best third-placed teams from Groups E, F, G, H, I or J.
Meanwhile, despite the defeat, Canada also advanced to the knockout rounds for the first time in the nation's history after finishing second in Group B.
Switzerland Continue Remarkable World Cup Record
The victory placed Switzerland among an elite group of nations that have reached the knockout rounds in each of the last four FIFA World Cups. Only Argentina and France have matched that achievement during the same period.
The result highlighted the consistency of Murat Yakin's side, who once again delivered when qualification was on the line.
Canada Reach Historic Milestone
Although Canada missed out on top spot, the tournament remains historic for the co-hosts. After drawing with Bosnia and Herzegovina and thrashing Qatar in their previous group matches, Canada collected enough points to secure second place and qualify for the knockout rounds for the first time ever.
However, finishing second means Jesse Marsch's team will lose the advantage of playing on home soil. Canada will now travel to Los Angeles, where they are scheduled to face the runners-up of Group A on June 28.
Tight First Half Produces Few Chances
The opening 45 minutes offered limited goal-scoring opportunities as both teams approached the match cautiously. Switzerland came closest to breaking the deadlock through Breel Embolo. The striker found space inside the penalty area, but Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau produced a strong save to keep the scores level.
Canada struggled to create clear-cut opportunities despite their attacking success against Qatar in the previous match. The hosts managed only three shots on target during a quiet first-half performance and rarely troubled the Swiss defense.
Vargas Opens the Scoring
Switzerland wasted little time after the restart. Just one minute into the second half, Johan Manzambi delivered an excellent cross to the far post, where Ruben Vargas arrived unmarked and calmly guided the ball into the net.
The goal was Vargas' second of the tournament and gave Switzerland the breakthrough they had been searching for.
Manzambi Doubles Switzerland's Advantage
The Swiss side continued to press and extended their lead 11 minutes later. Breel Embolo showed excellent strength and hold-up play before helping create space inside the Canadian penalty area. The move ended with Manzambi finishing confidently from close range to make it 2-0.
The goal put Switzerland firmly in control and left Canada with a mountain to climb.
Canada Respond but Fall Short
Canada finally found a way back into the contest in the 76th minute. Substitute Promise David made an immediate impact after coming off the bench. Just 76 seconds after entering the match, he finished a well-worked team move to cut Switzerland's lead in half.
The goal lifted the home crowd and gave Canada hope of a late comeback. However, Switzerland remained composed during the closing stages and successfully protected their advantage until the final whistle.
Knockout Stage Awaits
The victory ensured Switzerland finished as Group B winners and carried strong momentum into the knockout rounds. Canada, despite suffering defeat, celebrated a landmark achievement by reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.
Both teams now move on to the Round of 32, where they will look to continue their impressive campaigns on football's biggest stage.
