The first T20I of the five-match series between India and England ended without a result after heavy rain washed out England's chase at Durham. Before the weather intervened, India posted a competitive 189/7, thanks to blazing half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and captain Shreyas Iyer. Meanwhile, Saqib Mahmood (3/33 in 4 overs) impressed with the ball for England.
Abhishek Sharma gives India a flying start
After England won the toss and chose to bowl first, India suffered early setbacks but quickly recovered through an explosive knock from Abhishek Sharma. The left-handed opener smashed 59 off just 24 balls, bringing up his half-century in only 20 deliveries.
His aggressive batting completely shifted the momentum after India's poor start and put England's bowlers under pressure during the powerplay. Abhishek eventually fell lbw to Sam Curran, who deceived him with a well-executed leg cutter.
India lose two wickets early
India's innings began badly. Returning fast bowler Saqib Mahmood struck in the second over by dismissing Sanju Samson, who managed only five runs. Tom Banton completed an excellent catch at backward point to remove Samson.
The dismissal continued Samson's poor run of form, with his last three scores for India reading 5, 0 and 1. India suffered another setback in the same over when Ishan Kishan was run out for the second consecutive innings. At 6/2, India faced early pressure before Abhishek launched the counterattack.
Shreyas Iyer anchors the innings
While Abhishek attacked from one end, captain Shreyas Iyer played a composed supporting role. The pair added 82 runs in just 38 balls, completely changing the direction of the innings.
After Abhishek's dismissal, Shreyas continued the momentum and reached his half-century from 38 balls. He eventually top-scored with 68 runs, providing India with the stability they needed in the middle overs.
Shivam Dube adds finishing touches
After Shreyas departed, Shivam Dube maintained the scoring rate during the closing overs. The all-rounder blasted 42 runs at a strike rate of 200, ensuring India finished with a challenging total.
India scored 77 runs from 57 deliveries between the dismissals of Abhishek and Shreyas, a phase that proved crucial in taking the total to 189/7. The target appeared well within England's reach before rain spoiled the contest.
Saqib Mahmood shines on England return
Although the match ended without a result, Saqib Mahmood enjoyed an encouraging comeback to international cricket. The fast bowler finished with excellent figures of 3/33 in his first England appearance in more than a year.
His wickets came at important stages of the innings. After removing Samson early, Mahmood trapped the well-set Shreyas Iyer lbw before dismissing Tilak Varma later in the innings.
Long road back from injury
Mahmood's performance marked an emotional return after a difficult period away from international cricket. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had shown faith in him by awarding a 12-month central contract while he was recovering from knee surgery.
The injury forced Mahmood to miss England's T20I series against Ireland, withdraw from the SA20 tournament with Pretoria Capitals, and miss the ICC Men's T20 World Cup earlier in the year.
He worked his way back through appearances for the England Lions and Lancashire's pre-season tour before earning another opportunity with the national team. Mahmood also secured a £150,000 contract with Birmingham Phoenix, adding another positive milestone during his recovery.
Mixed spell but strong finish
Mahmood did not enjoy complete control throughout his spell. Abhishek Sharma attacked him aggressively, hitting three consecutive boundaries, including two sixes over square leg after the bowler pitched short.
One over cost Mahmood 21 runs, but he responded strongly. He conceded only 11 runs in his final two overs while picking up two more wickets to finish with impressive figures.
Despite strong competition, Mahmood's successful comeback provided England with another encouraging option for the remainder of the series. Although rain denied fans a result, the opening T20I offered plenty of positives, with India's powerful batting display and Mahmood's impressive return standing out before the weather brought the match to an early end.
