UK School Faces Backlash for Removing Bathroom Mirrors
The removal of mirrors from school toilets in England has sparked widespread debate, with students and parents criticizing the decision while officials defend it as necessary for discipline and punctuality.

The removal of mirrors from school toilets in England, United Kingdom, has sparked widespread debate. William Farr Comprehensive School in Welton, Lincoln, decided to take down all mirrors from its toilets. Authorities said the mirrors caused distractions and delayed students from reaching class on time.

School Bans Mirrors in Toilets

According to Lincolnshire Live, William Farr C of E Comprehensive School removed mirrors from all toilet facilities. School officials explained that students gathered in large groups, spending too much time in the toilets. Headteacher Grant Edgar stated that the school faced "transition time issues" that impacted punctuality. "The toilets became a gathering point, making it difficult for students who genuinely needed to use them," he said. As a result, the school noted that long lines and crowded restrooms slowed movement between lessons. This, in turn, delayed class start times. Officials estimated that if every lesson started two minutes late, students would lose 6.4 days of learning per year. Additionally, some students felt uncomfortable using the toilets due to large gatherings. Since both students and parents raised concerns about this issue, the school decided to remove the mirrors to create a safer environment. A school spokesperson clarified that students needing a mirror during the day could access one at the school reception or medical area. "Many schools have taken similar measures, and some have even stricter restroom policies," the spokesperson added.

Parents and Students React

Meanwhile, many students and parents criticized the decision and demanded the return of the mirrors. Some called the move "silly" and "extreme." For instance, one mother said the decision was "strange" and would affect her daughter, who wears contact lenses and braces. "She needs a mirror to adjust her lenses," she told the BBC. Similarly, another parent questioned the ban. "We have mirrors at home. Why can’t they have them at school?"

Similar Cases in Other Schools

Notably, other schools have also removed restroom mirrors. In January 2024, a middle school in North Carolina took down mirrors because students were making TikTok videos during class hours. Likewise, in 2023, Christopher Whitehead Language College in Worcester replaced mirrors with posters discouraging makeup use. The posters compared makeup to a "harmful drug" that made women "feel ugly." Parents protested, calling the approach inappropriate. Later, Headmaster Neil Morris admitted the mistake and reversed the decision.

Expert Opinion

As debates over school rules continue, psychologist Emma Kenny believes students should have a say in such decisions. "Schools have the right to make rules, but children should be involved in these discussions," she told the BBC. Moreover, she emphasized that some students rely on restroom spaces for comfort. "You don’t know what’s going on in a student’s life. Checking makeup or covering spots in the bathroom may be important for them," she explained. Therefore, Kenny urged schools to address the root issue. "If students are spending too much time in restrooms, maybe something needs to change within the school itself," she said. "Even in a supportive school, high school can feel overwhelming for many students."
