England Women cruised past Ireland Women in the second ODI of the three-match series at Derby. After being asked to bat first, Ireland Women somehow managed to score 165 before being bowled out in 47 overs. Issy Wong (5/33 in 10 overs), along with Mady Villiers (2/21 in 7 overs), dismantled Ireland Women’s batting lineup. Amy Hunter played a hard-fought innings of 64 runs off 96 balls. Orla Prendergast and Leah Paul supported her well but failed to make a significant impact.
While chasing, Maia Bouchier and Sophia Dunkley gave England Women a flying start, adding a quick-fire 54 runs for the first wicket in just 7.1 overs. Maia Bouchier scored a blazing 45 runs off 31 balls before being dismissed by Kia McCartney (2/45 in 6 overs) in the 10th over. Dani Gibson and Freya Kemp later finished the job in style, with England completing the chase with 27 overs to spare. With this win, England Women took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
Ireland Collapse After Hunter’s Fighting Fifty
Ireland lost wickets at regular intervals after being sent in to bat. Alice Tector was the first to depart in the second over when Sophia Dunkley produced a sharp gather and throw from mid-off to run her out. Wong then made an early impact by removing Ireland captain Gaby Lewis. She bowled an excellent delivery that moved back into the batter and went between the bat and pad before hitting the leg stump.
Mady Villiers joined the attack in the 22nd over and immediately made a difference. She bowled Orla Prendergast with a wicket maiden after the batter attempted a slog-sweep towards deep midwicket.
Villiers struck again in her following over. Rebecca Stokell attempted a drive but found Dani Gibson at extra cover after the ball drifted away late. Hunter survived another opportunity when she struck the ball straight back towards Villiers. The spinner was unable to complete the catch because she was wrong-footed after her follow-through.
Hunter continued to struggle for boundaries and relied mainly on singles. She eventually found some relief against Ryana MacDonald-Gay. After surviving an lbw review, she drove the next delivery through cover for a boundary. She added another four over midwicket in MacDonald-Gay's next over before reaching her half-century with a single off her 79th delivery. It was the slowest of her 11 ODI fifties.
Wong Completes Maiden International Five-Wicket Haul
Wong returned to the attack and quickly broke the important partnership between Hunter and Leah Paul. Paul was bowled after an inside edge deflected onto her off stump. Wong then dismissed Louise Little. England wicketkeeper Alice Capsey dropped the catch two balls earlier, but Little soon chipped the ball towards mid-off.8
Cara Murray became Wong's fourth victim when she was caught at mid-off. The dismissal also gave Wong a new career-best international bowling performance. The biggest wicket was still to come.
Wong dismissed Hunter to complete her first five-wicket haul in international cricket. Hunter attempted to play a big shot but found Villiers at deep midwicket, who completed a solid catch. Tilly Corteen-Coleman then picked up two wickets in her 10th over as Ireland's innings came to an end at 165.
Bouchier and Dunkley Give England a Fast Start
England began their chase aggressively. Maia Bouchier and Sophia Dunkley quickly put Ireland under pressure as they added 54 runs from 43 balls. The pair appeared ready to repeat their match-winning partnership from the first ODI. Dunkley also produced some powerful hitting, including a huge six off Prendergast over wide long-off.
However, their partnership ended in a surprising run-out. Bouchier dabbed a Kia McCartney delivery towards Prendergast at cover but continued running. Dunkley had little chance of reaching the other end and was run out.
Bouchier continued for a short while but then threw away her wicket. She picked out short backward square leg while attempting to attack a poor delivery from McCartney. McCartney struck again soon afterwards, removing Alice Capsey. The ball turned sharply from outside off stump and struck Capsey's pad as she tried to move back.
Gibson and Kemp Finish the Job
Jodi Grewcock, playing only her fourth match for England, made a useful start but could not stay long enough to finish the chase. With England needing only a manageable number of runs, Dani Gibson and Freya Kemp took control. The two powerful batters attacked the bowling and ensured there was no further drama. They added an unbeaten 47-run partnership and hit three sixes between them. Gibson smashed two sixes in three balls down the ground before completing the winning runs.
