TATA WPL 2025: Harleen Deol Shines as Gujarat Giants Clinch Last-Over Thriller Against Delhi
Harleen Deol's unbeaten 70 led Gujarat Giants to a thrilling last-over victory against Delhi Capitals in WPL 2025.

Gujarat Giants secured a thrilling five-wicket win against Delhi Capitals in Match 17 of the TATA Women’s Premier League 2025. This victory moved them to second place in the points table. The game had several momentum shifts, but Gujarat stayed strong in key moments. Harleen Deol played a match-winning knock, scoring an unbeaten 70 off 49 balls. Beth Mooney (44 off 35), Deandra Dottin (24 off 10), and captain Ashleigh Gardner (22 off 13) provided crucial support.

Delhi Capitals had already qualified for the playoffs but fought hard in both batting and bowling. Their skipper, Meg Lanning, led with a brilliant 92 off 57 balls, her highest WPL score. Her performance helped DC post a solid total of 177/5. Despite a disciplined bowling effort, they could not stop Gujarat’s determined chase. Harleen Deol’s calm approach under pressure secured a famous win in the final over.

Gujarat’s Chase Begins

Gujarat started poorly as D. Hemalatha fell early to Shikha Pandey. However, Mooney and Harleen stabilized the innings with smart batting. They played with controlled aggression, finding gaps and rotating the strike. Gujarat reached 38/1 in the powerplay.

Building a Strong Partnership

Mooney played spin well, using her footwork to create scoring opportunities. Harleen timed her shots beautifully. A dropped catch by Shafali Verma gave Harleen a second chance, and she capitalized. By the halfway mark, Gujarat stood at 75/1.

Middle-Order Contributions

Minnu Mani dismissed Mooney (44 off 35) with a sharp catch by Annabel Sutherland. Gardner arrived with intent, smashing two big sixes off Marizanne Kapp and Sutherland. However, Shikha Pandey removed her, shifting momentum again. Dottin stepped in and immediately hit a six off her first ball. Meanwhile, Harleen stayed steady, guiding the innings.

Late Drama and Match-Winning Finish

The 18th over brought drama. Jess Jonassen dismissed Dottin with a brilliant diving catch by Jemimah Rodrigues. The next ball, Phoebe Litchfield fell, leaving Gujarat needing 16 from 12 balls. Shikha Pandey bowled a tight penultimate over. Kashvee Gautam (9* off 3) hit a crucial six, reducing the target to seven runs in the final over. Harleen stayed composed, hitting a boundary before securing the win with quick running. Her unbeaten innings included nine fours and a six. Mooney’s steady knock, Gardner’s power-hitting, and Dottin’s late aggression helped Gujarat clinch victory in a tense finish.

Delhi’s Strong Start

Batting first, Delhi Capitals attacked from the start. Lanning smashed 12 runs in the first over. Shafali Verma followed with 14 in the next. Their aggressive play took DC to 51/0 in the powerplay, exploiting Gujarat’s fielding mistakes.

Lanning Leads the Charge

The partnership ended when Shafali fell for 40 off 27 balls. Litchfield caught her at the boundary off Meghna Singh’s bowling. Lanning continued her dominance. In the 12th over, Harleen almost pulled off a stunning catch to dismiss her, but Lanning survived. She reached her third WPL fifty in style with a six over extra cover, becoming the league’s all-time leading run-scorer.

Gujarat Fights Back

Gujarat struck back by removing Jess Jonassen and Jemimah Rodrigues. However, Lanning kept DC in control. She looked set to score WPL’s first century but got out for 92 off 57 balls (15 fours, 1 six) on the second-last delivery. Sarah Bryce finished the innings with a six, helping DC post 177/5.
