British Airways Flight Declares Emergency Over Ireland After 28,000-Foot Descent
A British Airways flight from London to Chicago declared an emergency over Ireland after a sudden 28,000-foot descent and later turned back towards Heathrow.
A British Airways flight flying from London to Chicago declared an emergency over Ireland on Monday after making a sudden descent of about 28,000 feet, according to flight-tracking data cited by UK media. British Airways Flight BA295 was travelling from London Heathrow Airport to Chicago O’Hare International Airport. The aircraft reportedly transmitted the international emergency transponder code 7700 while it was flying over Ireland. The flight was operated by a Boeing 777-200ER registered as G-VIIA. It left Heathrow Terminal 5 at around 11:50 am local time. The scheduled journey to Chicago was expected to take about eight hours and 40 minutes.

Aircraft Makes Sudden Descent

Flight-tracking data showed that BA295 first climbed to about 37,000 feet. The aircraft then made a rapid descent while flying over Ireland. It dropped to around 9,000 feet, representing a fall of roughly 28,000 feet. The steep descent happened about one hour after the aircraft began its transatlantic flight. The reason for the sudden change in altitude was not immediately known. No immediate information was available about the operational problem that may have caused the emergency.

Flight Turns Back Towards London

According to UK media reports based on flight-tracking data, BA295 later changed direction and began flying back towards London Heathrow. The move suggested that the flight had abandoned its planned journey to Chicago and was returning to its departure airport. British Airways had not immediately released details about the incident. The airline also had not confirmed what caused the emergency or why the aircraft diverted back to Heathrow. Further information about the condition of the aircraft and its passengers was not immediately available.

What Does the 7700 Emergency Code Mean?

The 7700 transponder code is an internationally recognised signal that pilots use during a general emergency. When a pilot enters 7700 into the aircraft's transponder, air traffic controllers can see the code on their radar systems. It alerts them that the aircraft may need priority treatment or emergency assistance. The code itself does not explain what type of emergency the aircraft is facing. Pilots can use 7700 for several situations. These can include medical emergencies, technical problems, severe weather or other issues that require urgent attention. After receiving the signal, air traffic controllers normally contact the flight crew. They then establish what has happened and determine what assistance the aircraft may need.
