Israel Cuts Gaza’s Power Supply to Force Ceasefire Extension
Israel cuts electricity to Gaza, pressuring Hamas to extend the ceasefire.

Israel cut off electricity to Gaza in an effort to force Hamas to extend the first phase of the ceasefire on Sunday. As a result, millions of residents now face worsening conditions.

Israeli Minister Calls for Immediate Action

Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen announced the decision on X. He firmly stated, "Enough with the talk, it’s time for action!" Furthermore, he confirmed that electricity would be cut immediately.

Israel Tightens Restrictions on Gaza

Previously, Israel also stopped all goods from entering Gaza. Consequently, more than two million people are struggling with limited resources. Before the war, Israel supplied most of Gaza’s electricity. However, since October 2023, Israel has restricted power and fuel, making it difficult for Gaza’s only power plant to function.

Violence Continues Despite Ceasefire Talks

Although the first ceasefire phase ended a week ago, both sides have avoided full-scale war. Nevertheless, sporadic attacks continue, keeping tensions high.

Hamas Calls for Next Ceasefire Phase

Instead of extending phase one, Hamas wants to move forward with phase two of the ceasefire. Therefore, the group has urged Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S. to pressure Israel into honoring the agreement.

"We call on mediators in Egypt and Qatar, as well as the guarantors in the US administration, to ensure that the occupation complies with the agreement… and proceeds with the second phase according to the agreed-upon terms," said Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem, as quoted by AFP.
